Leadership Awards Presented at
Wilkes Community College

On Wednesday, December 8, Wilkes Community Col
lege recognized two students, Sherry Mabry and Priti
Patel, for their outstanding leadership during the fall
semester. In order to be nominated for this award, stu
dents must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be actively
involved in at least one student organization, have
planned/coordinated at least one activity/event for a
student organization, and be planning to be enrolled at
WCC during the 2005 spring semester. Nominations
were accepted from club advisors and were then re
viewed by an awards committee that selected Sherry
Mabry and Priti Patel to be the recipients.
Sherry Mabry was nominated by Blair Hancock, divi
sion chairperson for Arts & Sciences and advisor for
Phi Theta Kappa. Sherry Mabry is enrolled in the Hu
man Services Program and is president of Phi Theta
Kappa and the Human Services Club. She is the editor
in chief of the student newspaper and is also a member
of the Baptist Student Union. In addition to her club
activities. Sherry serves as a tutor in the Student Sup
port Services program at the college. Sherry Mabry’s
community activities include volunteering for Hospice
and other church and service organizations.
Priti Patel was nominated by Martha Townes, lead
instructor for the Dental Assisting Program. Priti is
enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program and is the
President of the Dental Assisting Club. She also
served as the SGA secretary for the fall semester and is
the vice president of Phi Theta Kappa. Although she

is busy with school activities, Priti Patel provides ser
vice to the community by volunteering with Care Con
nection Pharmacy and serving as a mentor with Com
munities in Schools.
Sherry Mabry and Priti Patel were surprised when
WCC President, Dr. Gordon Bums, walked into one of
their classes and presented each of them with this lead
ership award. Dr. Bums commended them for taking
the time to get involved with activities at WCC and
thanked them for the leadership that they had given to
their respective student organizations. As recipients of
the Fall Semester Outstanding Student Leadership
Award, each student received a personalized plaque
and a $40 gift certificate to be used at the college
bookstore.
All of the student leaders at WCC donate a great deal
of time and work to help make the college a better
place for their fellow students. It is through this lead
ership award that the college hopes to recognize those
students who have been an exemplary role model in
both the classroom and co-curricular activities. All
students are encouraged to get involved with the Stu
dent Activities Program. A variety of educational,
recreational, social, cultural and community service
activities are coordinated throughout the year for stu
dents. In addition, there are 21 active student organi
