6 Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter Successful Spring Semester By Lorrie A. Gouge The Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Interna tional Honor Society enjoyed a successful Spring Semester. The Alpha Kappa Omega chapter fo cuses on both scholarship and community service. The Phi Theta Kappa International Service Project, “Conquering Cancer: Continuing the Fight,” has been a worthy endeavor for our chapter. We have donated $500 to Wilkes County Relay For Life. This is a very important community effort to assist in the fight against cancer. Alpha Kappa Omega sponsored a blood drive with the Red Cross on February 2, 2005, and 44 units of productive blood were donated. On March 11, members donated needed baked goods to assist Communities In Schools with a Chicken Q for the North Wilkesboro Chamber of Commerce. The chapter also sponsored a “New Century Scholar” for Communi ties In Schools for 2005. This sponsorship allows the chapter to help a child in Wilkes County both monetarily and academically. The Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter monitors the progress of the child through high school, and assist in other ways the child may need. Several members attended the video presentation of “Still killing Us Softly,” presented by Julie Mullis and Nolan Belk. This event corresponded with our Honors Topic “Pop Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.” Members had an excellent opportunity to repre sent our chapter in a campus event that involved fellow ship and intellectual debate with fellow students. The Wilkes Community College Phi Theta Kappa Inter national Honor Society Chapter, Alpha Kappa Omega, held a ceremony to honor thirty-eight new inductees on Sunday, April 3, 2005. An induction into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is a great honor and FHITHHAKAPPA G a Go ivrtiMAnoMM HONOt tairrr 0»rKfw>nMCOiit6i WCC’s faculty and staff are very proud of the students’ outstanding academic achievements. During the month of April, Project Graduation was held. Project Graduation is an event that the WCC chapter sponsors every year to assist local food banks with much needed non-perishable items. We want to thank all stu dents, faculty, and staff at WCC for using this opportu nity to help give to our community. The Alpha Kappa Omega chapter sold drinks on Friday and Saturday of the 2005 Merle fest. We all enjoyed a great time of fellowship and, of course, the music. The Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter members would also like to thank their advisors, Blair Hancock and Sheneele Wagoner, for their commitment to our society, and for supporting us in all that we do. -V ■CJ r uuua Feed a Body.
