WCC Students Participate In Seventh Annual L.E.A.D. Retreat By Scott Johnson The Student Activities Office sponsored the L.E.A.D. (Leadership Exploration And Development) Retreat for a selected group of rising sophomores on May 20. The purpose of this retreat was to bring together stu dents from the various clubs and/or academic depart ments to participate in discussions and information sessions about issues related to college life. Topics that were addressed included leadership training and stu dent leadership opportunities available at WCC; ser vices available through the Student Services Office as well as the overall college; career exploration; and a variety of team building activities which are suppor tive of leadership development. In order to be eligible for consideration as a participant in this retreat a stu dent had to meet the following requirements: 1. Be returning for his/her second year at WCC for the fall of 2005 2. Have demonstrated leadership potential during his/her first year at WCC 3. Be willing to assist in the development and imple mentation of 2 club/organizational events during the 2005 fall semester. The retreat was held in Boone, NC, on the campus of Appalachian State University. This program was or ganized and conducted by Scott Johnson, Student Ac tivities Coordinator, and Dr. Lynda Black, College Transfer Counselor. A brief description of each student that was selected to participate in this retreat is listed below. Chase Baker is enrolled in the Electrical/Electronics Technology program at the Ashe Center. Scotty Bare is enrolled in the Architectural Technol ogy program and is a member of the Architectural Technology Club. Brandon Bess is enrolled in the Associate in Science program and will be serving as president of the Stu dent Government Association for the 2005-2006 school year. He is also a member of the Baptist Stu dent Union and serves as the Western Division Chair person for the North Carolina Comprehensive Com munity College Student Government Association (N4CSGA). This summer he participated in the North Carolina Community College Student Leadership In stitute. Catherine Childers is enrolled in the Accounting and Business Administration programs. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Beta Lambda, and the Student Government Association. Autumn Cleary is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program and will be serving as the public information officer of the Student Government Association for the 2005-2006 school year. She is also a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Theta Kappa. Meleah Gambill is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program and will be serving as a programming chair person in the Student Government Association for the 2005-2006 school year. She is also a member of the Dental Assisting Club. This summer she participated in the North Carolina Community College Student Leadership Institute. Debra Gregory is enrolled in the Nursing program and is a member of the Nursing Club. Shelia Hamby is enrolled in the Paralegal Technology program and is serving as a programming chairperson in the Student Government Association for the 2005- 2006 school year. Kathy Howell is enrolled in the Office Systems Tech nology program and is serving as a programming chairperson in the Student Government Association for the 2005-2006 school year. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Grant Miller is enrolled in the Architectural Technol ogy program and is a member of the Architectural Technology Club. Michael Morrison is enrolled in the Architectural Technology program and is a member of the Architec tural Technology Club. Cris Pennington is enrolled in the Nursing program and is a member of the Nursing Club. Becky Victoria is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program at the Ashe Center and is a mem ber of the Student Government Association.
