Digging, clawing, and
scratching
By Michel Blevins
After starting 2-7, the Lady Cougar volleyball
team had a remarkable second half digging,
clawing, and scratching themselves out of the
hole they were in. Any other sports team that
started a season of 22 games with a record of
2-7 would have hung their heads, fooled around,
and finished just as they had started. Although
the ladies finished the regular season with a .500
record of ll-ll, fifth in the conference, they
earned the respect of many people with a stong
finished.
Here are some stats: six of the eleven wins were
3-0 shutouts, and the woman posted three wins
where the opposition only won one match. In
the second half of the season the team's hitting
efficiency increased over 5%. Five of our women
were ranked in the top 50 nationwide in Aces per
Game;
♦Jessica Yearick 7'''
♦Sara Bauguess 19*
♦Leah Gambill 24*
♦Jessica Hardy 27'’’
♦Kasey Sutts 45*
These rankings are for individual placement in
the National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA). Involving are one hundred and two
schools. Amber Hamby finished the season
ranked number 25th in the country with 4.963
digs per game. Sara Bauguess ended the season
ranked 41“ with 7.875 assists per game. Finally,
Leah Gambill was ranked 49* in the nation with
3.325 kills per game.
The Lady Cougars made Wilkes Community
College, the Cougar Cry, and Wilkes County
proud. To fight back from an abysmal 2-7 record,
and to finish the year winning nine of their last
thirteen games, that’s heart.

Lowes Hall Update
By Keisha Call
The new Lowes Hall is a magnificent facility being
constructed where the old James Larkin Pearson
building used to stand between Thompson Hall
and Alumni Hall. It is close to being finished and
only the punch list, is what has to be completed
before occupation, needs to be addressed.
Staff and faculty plan to move in before winter
break, but classes will not be held in the new
building until the spring semester. Lowes Hall
will also be a showcase for the James Larkin
Pearson collection.
The new building is 33,000 square feet and cost
$6.4 million, 96% of which was fiinded by the
Next Step Campaign, Plan One. It will house
new science labs, lecture halls, and classrooms
for biology, chemistry, and physical science.
There will also be ten computer labs and two
cyber classrooms. Two elevators with glass
backs overlook the atrium. Lowes Hall can be
accessed from Randolph Hall, Thompson Hall,
Alumni Hall, and from the parking lots. Parking
will increase after the project is completed
because many spaces are vurrently being used
for construction equipment. The dedication for
Lowes Hall will be March 29,2007.
