Global Ed Prospers!
By: Yessenia Alvarez
Global Education Department, directed
by Dr. Karen Staten, started out
strong with the help of 7 members
of the Intercultural Club (aka ICC).
They organized and hosted a forum
on Internationalizing the Curriculum
this past June on the Wilkes campus.
Roughly 7D participants from North
Carolina community colleges and high
schools attended the summer forum.
Key speakers and participants included
Scott Ralls, President of North Carolina
Community College System, and Rebecca
Garland, Executive Director of the North
Carolina State Board of Education.
The forum addressed internationalizing
youth through the curriculum, global
competence in current workforce, and
strategic plans for globalization. Among
other topics was introducing Chinese as
a foreign language in the curriculum.

No Smoking Except in
Designated Areas
Page 3
In 2DD7 WCC adopted a policy limiting
smoking to designated areas only. Your
compliance with the campus tobacco
policy is appreciated in light of the fact
that there are individuals on campus with
health problems (asthma, CDPD) who are
severely affected by secondhand smoke.
Thank you for your support of a healthy
and safe campus environment. Please
see the bottom of page 3 to locate the
smoking areas near you.
Women and Tobacco
By: Cathy Annas,
WCC Tobacco Use Prevention Coordinator
In light of the upcoming elections,
women's issues are receiving a great
deal of attention. Women play major roles
in our nation such as mothers, career
professionals, and leaders. With so many
encompassing responsibilities, maintaining
good physical health can be challenging for
this population. Tobacco use prevention is
one area where women can be proactive.
Former Surgeon General David Satcher
stated, "When calling attention to public
health problems, we must not misuse the
word 'epidemic.' But there is no better
word- to describe the BDD-percent
increase since I95D in women's death rates
