By: Yessenia Alvarez Global Education Department, directed by Dr. Karen Staten, started out strong with the help of 7 members of the Intercultural Club (aka ICC). They organized and hosted a forum on Internationalizing the Curriculum this past June on the Wilkes campus. Roughly 7D participants from North Carolina community colleges and high schools attended the summer forum. Key speakers and participants included Scott Ralls, President of North Carolina Community College System, and Rebecca Garland, Executive Director of the North Carolina State Board of Education. The forum addressed internationalizing youth through the curriculum, global competence in current workforce, and strategic plans for globalization. Among other topics was introducing Chinese as a foreign language in the curriculum. Talents performed shall be both domestic and international! ■Traditional Native American Pow Wow, Hosted by WCC Global Ed Dept: Saturday, November 8th, lOam-Bpm in WCC Gym located in Randolph Hall. Entrance is free! Highlights of the event include storytelling, dancing, drumming, and authentic vendors. Grand Entrance will be at Noon. Regular ICC meetings are held the first Monday of each month and to better accommodate students' schedules all have the option of coming to either the Ham meeting or the Noon meeting. Same issues are discussed in both meetings. No Smoking Except in Designated Areas Page 3 In 2DD7 WCC adopted a policy limiting smoking to designated areas only. Your compliance with the campus tobacco policy is appreciated in light of the fact that there are individuals on campus with health problems (asthma, CDPD) who are severely affected by secondhand smoke. Women and Tobacco By: Cathy Annas, WCC Tobacco Use Prevention Coordinator In light of the upcoming elections, women's issues are receiving a great deal of attention. Women play major roles in our nation such as mothers, career professionals, and leaders. With so many encompassing responsibilities, maintaining good physical health can be challenging for this population. Tobacco use prevention is one area where women can be proactive. Former Surgeon General David Satcher stated, "When calling attention to public health problems, we must not misuse the word 'epidemic.'
