The attention of the student body is called to the advertise ments in the GUILFORDI.YX. The persons who are paying to adver tise in our paper are those w_o have faith in the student body and those who are willing to support its institutions. It is only by their assistance that the maintenance of the paper is possible financially. For this reason we urge tin stu dents to favor these men with as much patronage as possible, and let them know that you are from Guilford, so that they can see some tangible results from their adver tising and not feel that it is pure charity. At the regular meeting of the Pliilomathean Society on Friday evening, October IG, the following officers were installed: President, Blanche Dixon; secretary, Debo rah Brown; marshal, Clara Blair. A very interesting and instructive Carolina program was rendered. We have had splendid discussions on the cotton question in tlie South and on student government. On the evening of the 23rd Mis Hobbs and Miss Patterson sang the ' Lorelei" in German. This year it was decided to have a secret critic appointed for each, meeting, whose report should b, given the following week, by the critic for the evening. So far these reports, though not pleasant, have proved helpful. On the whole the members of the Society are doing excellent work. Especially do we wish to commend the interest manifested by our new members. They seem to realize, as the old members do, that the benefit derived from Soci ety work will be in proportion to the effort put forth and conse quently they are striving to get the most possible out of the work. LETTERS TO GUILFORDIAN. (Publication of letters does not neces sarily imply that their sentiments are indorsed by the Editors.) Lunch. While traveling at considerable speed the direct line between Cox Hall and the east corner of Foun der's about 13:31 p. 111., one day last week, I realized that I was hungry. Upon mentioning this not unusual fact to my compan ions. 1 was not surprised to learn that several shared the same feel ing, because we merely had a pass age from the Bible and imagina tion for breakfast; and even that scanty meal was served cold. Full of anticipation, but empty otherwise, we arrived at our table in record time and sat down. I expected, at the very worst, to get hash. Was I disappointed? Yes, indeed, also dismayed! There was nothing but plates on the table and even these were un dersized. Time passed and the waitresses passed, but nothing to eat appeared. Was this all? Would 1 be forced to eat these sandwiches or these plates? I had seen such left on the table after a hungry bunch had demolished a Sunday night suppr, but for din ner! The idea was preposterous. Nevertheless it seemed to be true, that what was before us was all we were to have to eat. In other words, this was not dinner, it was lunch! If they fool us that way without any excuse, 1 certainly hope the first of April comes on Saturday, so 1 will be at home. CALENDAR. Thursday—Y. M. and Y. W. mid-week prayer meeting.
