Of Festivals in General. —The festivals selected for celebration this year include an All Souls' commemoration; a Christmas Carol Service, and a Spring; or May-day festival. The first of these is introduced for a special pedagogical purpose. It is felt desirable to bring; before students the larger world-view of human history. We 100 common ly fail to get beyond the national point of view. We do not see his tory and civilization from the uni versal standpoint. The All Souls' festival involves a consideration of universal history, and in its largest aspects it is a brief roll call of some of the greatest names of history. 11 is an invaluable means of reminding students of the importance attached in the curriculum to the historic consid eration of various subjects. Stu dents are expected to have such an historic outline—some concep tion that is, of the slow steps by which, let us say, mathematics, history, science and art have de veloped. Our festival this year was of the simplest character. Follow ing the order given in the little printed programs distributed among the students, the short me morial sentences were read in uni son by students and leader. This commemoration costs less in the labor of preparation than any oth er, yet it is one of the most fruit ful of those that are held. The Thanksgiving Festival. Thanksgiving comes so near to Christmas that we cannot name it among festivals for which we make special musical preparation. We have for several weeks, how ever, been uniting our voices in singing St. George's, Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of Harvest Home. And we have come to sing it in a really thankful spirit. For the Thanksgiving Festival two contrasting types of music are available: the vigorous Harv est Home song and the quiet Psalm of Thanksgiving. The first is typified by the following simple refrain : Wake, viol and flute: Gay horn he not mute. The harvest is over; The grain and the clover, Ripe fruit from the tree. All garner'd have ire. Our broad fields we ploughed, We harrow'd and sow'd; We toil'd on together In fair and foul weather; Our labor was btess'd; Now sweet is our rest. Every nation has songs of this type—harvest and vintage songs there are in profusion. The more serious music for Thanksgiving is to be found ir. THE GUILFORDIAN many of the harvest cantatas in tended for church use. They usually begin with the summons to give thanks for the harvest, continue with songs of the work ers .md conclude with hymns of praise and thanksgiving. Gar rett's Harvest Cantata or Adam's Seed lime ami Harvest may he taken as typical. Closely allied with the harvest idea is the American Thanksgiv ing, recalling the early struggles of the Pilgrims. Mrs. Heman's lines on the landing of the Pil grims, The Breaking Waves Dash ed Hifih, have been set twice or more and are very effective. Here, too, belong the psalms and hymns used by the Pilgrims— Old Hun dredth and York tunes with their quaint psalm texls. Another element which contrib utes to the American Thanksgiv ing festival is Indian music. The strong rhythniica! music of the tl ilies is in striking contrast with the hymns of the Pilgrims, and is of great value in giving the feel ing of the wilderness untenanted by white men. The Indian harv est episode from Longfellow's Hi awatha is a valuable contribution to a Thanksgiving festival. In conclusion, music is so sensi tive a helper in the correlation of the many phases of a student's thought and stndv that his par ticipation in it should be gravely encouraged. There is no reason for the singing of college songs to be the only opportunity for sing ing which the average man and woman has outside of church serv ices. As far as possible every one should be enlisted in the cause of making familiar to the commun ity songs which will aid in ex pressing the great ideas and feed ings embodied in festivals such ak we have herein named.
