4 ALUMNI NOTES. A recent item in the press of the State noted the organization of The Associated Charities of High Point, which has for its pur pose local welfare work. 'OB, writes that she has been compell ed to give up her work as a teach er on account of the ill health of her mother. She is now at home attending to household duties. The readers of the GUILFORDIAN are indebted to Miss Raiford for the excellent account of the Guil ford dinner at Baltimore, which was reported in last week's issue. At the meeting of lite Literal'} Club held just before the Thanks giving holidays there was a small attendance, but an interesting program. First the third day's battle was reviewed and many in teresting passages noted. The story of the return of Achilles to the battle to avenge the death of his friend Patroelus was then told. Among the quotations which were read from Hook XIX, was one which we all might heed. II is the introduction to a speech made by King Agamemnon : "Whoever rises up to speak, 'Tis well to hear him through, and not break in Upon his speech, else is the most expert Confounded. Who amid a clamor ous throng- Can listen or can speak? The orator Of clearest voice must utter it in vain." Miss Edwards told the story of Hector, tlx 1 Trojan hero, in a. very vivid way, and made one feel the greatness and the gentleness of his character. At the next meeting, Dec. 9, Miss Osborn had the subject of the funeral rites of the Iliad, and Miss Julia White, the similes of the Iliad. There are many beau tiful similes in the Iliad and Miss White selected several that were typical of the Homeric style. The club adjourned to meet at the home of President and Mrs. Ilobbs on Tuesday night, Decem ber 15, to finish up the study of the Iliad. Affirmative, Eliza beth Holton; negative, Ethel Speas. Song—Bernice Pike. Life of 'hopin—Pauline Out laml. The debate was very interesting ami we were especially glad that one of our new members, who up held the affirmative, did so well. It is encouraging to the old mem hers to see the new ones taking so much interest and doing their as signed duties in such a commend able manner. The committee which had been appointed to bring in the names of those who wished to enter the oratorical contest, reported nine names. From these, the following six were chosen: Beatrice Crouch. Ethel Whitman, Ethel Speas, Luna Cox, Nannie Payne and Ber nice Pike. We feel sure that it will be a successful contest, and we hope the girls will get to work early preparing their orations. W. H.
