EXAMINATIONS COMING!
Cliristmast has come and gone;
vacation with all ol its pleasant
memories is now a thing of the
past, the new year full ol oppor
tunities has already dawned upon
us, the close of the term is almost
here and examinations are loom
ing up before us.
It is with some degree of satis
faction that we take up our work,
for while we realize that much
good is to be derived from pleas
urable things, yet work is our
chief promoter and we are glad
that we are permitted to resume
it again.
In many respects these last
days are the most important of
the whole school year. Of course
it is not so much a time for us to
study as for us to get what we
have already learned in shape to
tell on examination. Every one
of us should spend this week as
profitably as possible and then in
the next term, if any of us "have
been careless in preparing our
lessons let us profit by our mis
takes and begin with such renew
ed enthusiasm and determination
as will last the entire time and
when the examinations come they
will not be so difficult for us and
more of us will feel better when
we see our reports.
PHILOMATHEAN NOTES.
The old year has gone and Phil
omatheans beginning the new
year are determined to "let the
dead past bury its dead," and
strive to make the year nineteen
hundred fifteen one long to be re
membered in the history of the So
ciety. With only a few exceptions
all ol" the members have returned
and "settled down" to work. It is
with pride that we note that the
work of the Society was taken up
where we left oil' before the holi
days, just as if nothing had hap
pened to interfere with the regu
lar routine.
The program for January 8 was
very well rendered. Each partici
pant showed that she had put
forth a great amount of effort in
order that the exercises of the
evening might come up to the
usual high standard, although
only three days had elapsed since
the opening of school. At this
meeting a committee was appoint
ed I> get I lie names of all the girls
who wished to enter the annnal
oratorical contest to be held in
May. A list of the names of the
selected contestants will he pub
lished later.
Through the columns of the
(luiLFORDTAN the Society extends
its best wishes for the year just
beginning, to every former Philo
inathean.
V. W. C. A. NOTES.
Although only two days had
elapsed since the opening of
school, the girls had their usual
mid-week prayer meeting and as
much enthusiasm and interest
was shown as in any of the former
meetings. Miss Osborne conduct
ed the service—her theme being
friendship. She told us of the
love of David for Saul, his enemy,
and Jonathan his friend. She
showed us what a great man Da
vid was to love such a bitter ene
my as Saul. Then she pointed out
the admirable qualities in Jona
than —that willingness of his to
give way to his friend. From this
we got the idea of a real friend;
to be a real friend we have to be
willing to sacrifice some pleasures
and possibly to forfeit some hon
orable position as in the case of
Jonathan.
She said that the strongest
friendships were formed in col
lege; friends are there made who
will go with us through life and
who will be most interested in our
welfare.
SOPHOMORES WIN DEBATE.

class 'll, and Arthur Osborne,
