"IDLENESS."
In every college 01* in any insti
tution of learning an idle class is
likely to be found. And it seems
thai our college is not an excep
tion to this rule, for a large num
ber of our students who are capa
ble of developing themselves in
tellectually and of taking an ac
tive part in the outside work are
found idle when they should be
diligently applying themselves.
The college boys and girls of to
day will be the men and women of
tin* world tomorrow. Likewise
the under class men of today will
be the upper class men of tomor
row. '••lnst as the twig is bent
the tree inclines." The boy or
girl idler is simply tbp adult-idler
in the making. And it has been
aptly said that "idleness and lux
ury bring forth poverty and
want." The one who is allowed
to grow up unskilled in any pro
fession is the one who is most
likely to lapse into the state of
mental, spiritual and physical
stagnation.
The author of the "Anatomy of
Melancholy" has fitly character
ized idleness as "the nurse of
naughtiness; the chief author of
mischief; one of the seven deadly
sins; the cushion upon which the
devil chiefly reposes; and a great
cause not only of melancholy but
also of many other diseases."
The student should not feel that
the only object of an education is
to be able to earn money or to
make grades but should realize
his obligation to serve as he is
served; to give as he receives; to
bring to the world as he takes
from it. If one obtains such an
idea while here one will go out
into the world feeling not that the
world owes one a living but that
one owes to the world a life.

A MATTER OF CHURCH.
Have you ever heard any one
say, "If tbey make us go to church
on Sunday, why don't they give
us sermons that are always worth
while?"
Should we .be compelled to go
to church when at times (I am
not saying always) the sermons
are interesting enough to attract
only per cent, of the faculty?
Perhaps three-fourths of us are
not attracted, hut rather com
pelled.
The habit of regularly at lend
ing some form of worship is bene
ficial for children, unless it is too
rigidly enforced and ilius will
cause a violent reaction later.
When we come to the age of 1")
years, we are out of our most plas
t it- stage. If we are not in I lie
habit of attending church, we will
not be very likely to take it up,
unless as here, under compulsion.
1 would be afraid that compulsion
with a rebellious majority of stu
dents might breed indifference
and lasting non-interest for that
which in the slightest smacks of
religion.
I have already hinted at what
would remove this rebellion,
namely, sermons of a uniformly
high standard.
Is it presumptuous to assume
that in this three-fourths of the
faculty will agree with me?

The Joseph Moore Science Club
held its regular meeting Wednes
day evening, March 10th, in the
Physics Laboratory. Mr. Dix m
who had charge of the meeting
spoke on the magnetic effects pro
duced by a current of electricitv
flowing through a wire. The lec
ture was illustrated by many ex
periments—the chief one beine
the projection on the screen of the
arrangement of fine iron filings
when these are sprinkled on a
glass plate through which a wire
carrying a current is passed. The
filings arranged themselves in con
centric circles showing clearly tin
magnetic effect of the current.
