A large number of men and women think that happiness is the most desirable object to ob tain but almost every one lias a different opinion as to the best way of securing it. Many are agreed, for instance, that it is a thing to be obtained by work; that it is to be found at some def inite time and place; and that it can be achieved only by conscious effort. They think of it as a place at a distance, as a kind of mate rial reward for material toil. But all of these are misleading ideas, "if a man is to be happy he must be happy now; if lie'is to be hap py he must be happy here; if he is to be happy he must be happy in himself and thus make others hap py in themselves." We are coming to understand the tremendous influence of one mind over another and the mind over the body. A writer once said of Mrs. Alice Freeman Palmer: "When I last saw Mrs. Palmer I was in a hopeless state, caring lit tle what 1 did, especially as re gards writing. I never mentioned it to her but with that marvelous instinct she must: have perceived it. At any rate she began at once to kindle me and before I knew what was happening I was afire to do a man's work again.'' The knowledge of such influence of one over another awakens us to an unescapalde obligation. As it is a man's duty to call in a physician when he is ill, so it is equally his duty to cure himself of pessimism, which is also a dis ease. Likewise it is his duty to leinvigorate society and dispel the fogs of the world by his cheer fulness. This is perhaps the highest form of help a college student can ren der to his associates because ii helps them to help themselves. Courage is worth much more to a despondent man than money. In this time, especially when so many vital problems are to be solved, so many hard conditions confront serious men and women, it is every man's duty to carry a brave spirit and to make a generous con tribution to the fund of common. feeling. Society lias no greater eneinV in times of despondency and despair tlian :t pessimist, who robs it of its hopes and weakens it when it needs strength. There is no room for a pessimist in col lege and if by chance there should be one. let us make a special effort to show'him or her the bright side of life. CALENDAR.
