We are now playing football ;il Guilford a/id, from the interest with which all have been watch ing the development of a team, it would seem to be heartily support ed. Hut is this true? The football club has given suits to more boys than are necessary for two complete teams, yet it :s only by hard work that they are able to get twenty-two men on the field it one time. Is it because the boys haven't got the nerve? Ido not wish to accuse any Guilford boy of this until I know absolute ly that it is true. I would rather think that I t- is debating the ques tion: Does it pay? This question must be answered by every one for himself, but for those who are physically able there are many good arguments for football. I think no one will deny that football develops manly qualities. It takes grit to hit a living wall of men, but doing this mokes a man fearless —a cowarl cannot do it. It takes the best of brain and muscle to play the game successfully and this undoubtedly tends to make the football player live clean. I think that any one who is a man, physically speaking, and who is not a coward can get both pleasure and benefit from this game. The gridiron is a go >ri place to learn to know your fellow students. It is a good place to ex pend surplus energy and at the same time develop qualities t at will make one successful in the big game of life. ZATASIAN NOTES. At our meeting on October 1. some of our new members were called upon to help with the pro gram for the first time. These la dies performed their parts well and gave us an inkling of what they can do. Under miscellaneous business it w as suggested that we plant some of our society flowers, the blue for get-me-nots, in pots to keep in the windows of our hall. This plan was heartily approved and a com mittee was appointed to set; about carrying, out the plan. Since the very beginning of this school year some of our members have been interested in composing ;i Zatasian Society song. At this meeting a song was submitted to be read before the society. Every one seemed pleased with it and it was adopted as our society song for the present. On October 8, the following of ficers were installed, having been elected the meeting before: Presi dent, Ethel Speas; vice-president. Ellen White; secretary, Gertrude Crouk; marshal, Grace Burke. We had a splendid programme which showed much interest and Corel bought. At these two meetings the fol lowing members were added to our number: Beulah Cranford, Vanner Xeece, Eula Haekett, Leacy Haekett, Alta Lindley, Eleanor Fox. and IJuth Harding. LETTERS TO GUI LFORDI AN. (The publication of letters does not necessarily mean that their senti ments are indorsed by the Board.) "THE QUILFORDIAN" SPIRIT. There is a goodiv number of stu dents on the campus who are sad ly neglecting some of their duties as (iuilfordians. In other words there are boys and girls here who lack the true (luilford spirit. Now of all things that we should not do this is one. Perhaps you think you have this Guilford spirit but when you fail to support THK GFILFORDIAX you certainly show lack of college and society spirit. THE GUILFORDIAN is put out by the active student body of Guil ford College, and not by the fac ulty. It belongs to the student body and therefore, should be and must be supported by that body. Have you subscribed to TIIE GUILFORDIAN? If you have not you are not showing the true Guil ford spirit. You are not only do ing this but you are also losing much when you thus forfeit your right to partnership in TIIE GUIL FORDIAX. There are some students here who have not subscribed to the college paper and yet they can tell one everything it contains. How did they find it out? Well, I sup pose those students read their neighbor's paper. Now this is not the thing for any member of this student body to do. You owe THE GUILFORDIAN your loyal support and if you are reading your neigh bor's paper you are sadly neglect ing your duty to your paper, your society and your college for you are threatening Ihe very existence of a college paper. If every one showed the same attitude towards THE GUILFORDIAN that you are showing what would the paper be? Moral: Come across; subscribe, contribute.
