Some students sit placidly in their rooms while society is in progress, without realizing that they are missing one of the greatest things •that college life offers them. Oth ers can see a society prize award ed without once trying to win it because they know it would re quire effort. Such students have a tendency to belittle all things to be achiev ed by hard work. They actually argue that prizes, scholarships and grades are not worth the ef fort and they are willing to accept defeat without a battle —surren- der without a shot. These stu dents evidently l ave and are culti vating those qualities that are detrimental to success. In this day of strenuous compe tition it is the energetic man—the man who works —that wins, and if we hope to have these qualities, when we go forth to cope with men of the world, we must culti vate them here. The cultivation of different habits, if entered into whole-heartedly, would be a pleas ure, for it is only the student who doesn't know how to work who does not like it. A student who knows how to work, and works, enjoys it. It is a pleasure to him. HENRY CLAY SOCIETY NOTES. On Friday night, February 18, the following officers were install ed : L. E. Stuart, president; J. E. Williams, secretary; F. Town send, marshal. The meeting of February 25th was very well attended. The fol lowing program was rendered: Debate, Resolved, that the pres ent administration deserves re election. Affirmative, Jones, Lloyd and doe White; negative, Shelton, Valentine, and J. C. Williams. Lecture —Mason. The affirmative advanced the argument that the present admin istration has kept us out of war much longer than previous ad ministrations would have done, and that it would be unwise to change the chief executive in tliis ( risis. The negative contended that the .idministration is unworthy of a second term because of the shift less manner in which it has ban died international affairs during the war. They also pointed out men better fitted for the position. The debate upon the whole was spirited, instructive, and interest ing. The negative presented the better outline and won the de cisions of both house and judges. Mason gave an interesting le ture on "Psychology." He relate 1 some of the abnormal acts of a morbid mind, due to some unex plainable mental conditions. This number deserves special menti n because of the unusual subjeti and the excellent manner in which it was rendered. 1). Budd and Thompson weir called out for an extemporaneous debate. This was short, crisp an i humorous. There being no further business the critic, R. C. Kiser, rendered his report, which was unusually good because he directed Ihe criti cisms to the members individual ly. PERSONALS. Mr. Ernest Shore spent last week at the college. Messrs.
