ALUMNI!
Come to the Big Game Saturday
Night.
The game between Guilford and
U. N. C. —to be played at Greensboro
Y. M. C. A. on next Saturday night,
promises to be one of the strongest
of the season. For this reason, it
would seem unnecessary to urge at
tendance upon this game, but the
woeful absence of Guilfordians on
similar occasions in the past makes
it very evident that a pressing call
for loyal support is not out of place
here. There is no better channel
through which alumni and old stu
dents can continue to show their in
terest in their Alma Mater than
through athletics, and especially
through interest in those games play
ed away from the college. To win
a game, a team needs to be backed
up, and nobody can do that so well
as those who have felt the thrill be
fore Come out and help Guilford
score another success in basket ball,
and renew your college spirit Sat-
urday night
The criticism has recently >been of-
fered that the Guilfordian as a pub
lication does not contain sufficient
material of a literary nature—that
it is lacking in short stories, poems,
sketches and other varieties of wri
ting purely literary in character.
Keeping in mind the fact that the
function of a college weekly is pri
marily that of a chronicle for college
happenings there doubtless exists
nevertheless some ground for the
above criticism
The Guilfordian was first publish-
Ed with the general plan that there
should be appended to the regular
weekly paper a literary supplement
once during each month. For some
reason this idea was never carried
out and only one supplement has ap
peared up to date.
It is the purpose of the present
staff to put out a literary supple
ment in the near future and by this
means it is hoped that talent here
tofore hidden may be brot to light.
This supplement should represent
the best efforts of that part particu
larly of our student body which is
not on the board.
If you "lisp in numbers," if you
are a favored child of the Muse, then
give vent to your feelings in some
form of poetic verse. If, on the oth
er hand the thousand and one possi-
bilities of short story writings appeal
to you try your hand at something
original along that line.
There is certainly no reason why
we could not have a literary supple
ment which is representative of our
several ability -i a literary way
In order that the highest good may
revert to the greatest numfber there
needs to be spread abroad in our
college of Guilford a more general
sense of individual responsibility—
each and every boy and girl needs to
realize that he or she is an integral
part of college life here whether or
not that particular student in ques
tion be an office holder. It matters
little whether or not a student has
had a particular part or office in
some organization assigned to him—
that should by no means be a pre
requisite of good work in a college
organization. The tendency to leave
to a few persons the service which
should be performed whole-hearted
ly by all alike, is all to prevalent at
Guilford.
Y. W. C. A. NOTES.
The prayer meeting 011 last Thurs
day night was of a general character
but one full of interest and inspira
tion. The meeting was opened by a
few well chosen remarks by Miss De
borah Brown. "We should every
one," said the leader, "take a part
in the meeting and feel it a part of
our duty to give to the meeting and
not be content with always listen
ing. Possibly we might say some
thing that would reach some one and
lighten her burden."
After thi6 Miss Brown threw the
meeting open for all. This invita
tion was responded to by a number
of the girls and members of the fac
ulty. The thought of giving was em
phasized by nearly all the speakers.
"We are sure," said one, "to say
THE GUILFORDIAN
something that will strengthen not
only ourselves but those who hear."
Plans were suggested for improving
the Association and thus enabling
the whole work to be more efficient.
Although we are but a small part in
the great work, we must do our part
so that no weak links will be found.
Quite a number of the girls esti
mated the value of the Association
to them. Some placed it first among
the enjoyable and beneficial things
which one meets here, while others
ranked it among the best things with
which we come in contact.
Throughout the meeting was one
of the best held this year and we are
expecting many more of this high
standard.
The magazines and weeklies that
have found their way into the Guil
fordian office have been thoroly en
joyed—not only for the entertaining
reading which they have brot, but
also for the glimpses of the real col
lege life of the respective colleges.
The State Normal Magazine for
January with its patriotic poems and
wholesome short stories found an
especially warm welcome.
The Wake Forest Student, bear
ing the stamp of its usual high
grade of excellence, has been eagerly
read.
The Critograph and Skull and
Bones both come from the Old Do
minion. Both are good weeklies. It
is very apparent however that even
the most diligent readers of Life
would shutter at and consign to the
waste 'basiket some of the coarse
jokes published in the latter paper.
Some short sketches could much
more profitably fill the space occu
pied by these stale and unwholesome
jokes.
The Flat Hat evidently hails from
a town where advertisers are most
generous. Indeed it proves to be an
advertising sheet with a little college
news interspersed. Its chief merit is
its quaintnese.
Among the others which have
been gladly received are: The Trinity
Chronicler, The Quaker Campus, The
Brown and White, Radcliffe News,
The Laurentian, Old Gold and Black,
Davidsonian, Pine and Thistle, The
Princess.
