4 PHILOMATHEANS ENTERTAIN NEW MEMBERS Friday eveing, October 4th, on en tering their Society hall the Philo mathean girls almost imagined them selves in an autinun forest so beau tifully was it decorated with red, brown and yellow eaves intermin gled with golden rods. However they soon recognized that it was their own Society hall and found seats. The Society was called to or der and Addie Morris, 'lB, was ap pointed critic fojr the evening. On entering the door each girl had re ceived a brightly colored maple leaf on which the following program was written: I. Discussion of the race confueio® in Austria-Hungary —Miss Dixon. 11. Discussion of the Czecho-Slav s nation and of the characteristics of these people—Miss Dovie Hayworth., 111. Here and There —Miss Jessie Cox. IV. The Old Woinau and the Par son —Mies Lula Raiford. After a splendid critic's report and a few remarks by Miss Lasley, 'l3, the Society adjourned to spend a social hour during which the follow ing menu was served: Jack Frost Sandwiches Acorn Bread Brown Nut Tea On October 11th Society was call ed to order and Madge Coble was ap pointed critic for the evening. As this was the timu for installation of officers the following old oELcers, President Coltrane, Secretary Hay worth, Marshal Blair gave their places to the new officers: President, Miss V. Hay worth; secretary, Miss D. Hay worth; marshal, Miss Bulla. On account of the quarantine Miss Hobbs, president, and Miss Coble, secretary,'had to be replaced by the above named. The following pro gram was then given: I. Expansion of Russia —Miss Stewart. 11. Recitation —Mies Whitney. 111. Economic Conquest of Russia —Miss Shamburger. IV. Instrumental solo —'Miss Ed gerton. V. The World War and the Con flict Between Throne and Duma — Miss E. Raiford. The 11. and V. numbers deserve especial mention. Miss Katherine Harmon was glad ly received as a member of Society. The new girls should be highly commended for their splendid rendi tion of the subjects. The third num ber was also well gotten up. After a report from the critic. Society ad journed. GUILFORD HASH! Mr. Guevchenian has been trying very hard this week to find any of an excuse to take him into towiv Every afternoon he gets into his car and rides down to the gateway. It is feared that if the quarantine isn't lifted he will soon be looking greatly emaciated. Sunday evening a very successful vesper service was held on the li brary steps. The various faculty advisors have been using various means to get ac quainted with their respective advi sees—some by entertaining, and others by walking. YVEBSTERIANS DEBATE SOCIAL QUESTIONS The Webs had a very interesting debate on Friday evening, October 11th, when the question, Resolved, that fhere should be a social on Sat urday evening, October 12th, was extemporaneously debated by Taylor and Stafford. Taylor, who upheld the affirmative, introduced much hu mor into his argument. Stafford, who upheld the negative, .produced hla argument strongly. The judges rendered a negative decision. This being the regular meeting for the election of new officers, the following men were elected: Presi THE GUJULFORDIAN dent, D. J. White; vice-president, Barnard; secretary, J. D. Taylor; assistant secretary, F. N. Woody; marshal, 0. Stafford. The Webs were glad to have pres ent several visiting new men. They all showed great interest and the prospects are good for a successful year in society work. The Zatasian Literary Society was called to order on last Friday even ing by President Smith. This being the regular meeting for the installation of officers the follow ing were installed: President, Miss Neece; secretary, Miss Williams; marshal, Miss White. The following program was then given: I. Book Review —Miss Seal. 11. Vocal Solo—Miss Hockett. 111. Reading—Miss Rayle. IV. Current Events —Mies Smith. The selections by Miss Seal and Miss Smith were especially interest ing and instructive. Under miscellaneous business an executive committee consisting of Miss Martin, Miss chilton and Miss Rayle was appointed.
