4 ALUMNI NOTES. Itimous Valentine, 'l6, who has seen about six months' service in France and who was a member of the 113 th Division, has just returned from overseas. He was discharged from service at Camp Jackson a few days ago and paid friends at the col lege a visit on his way home. Henry Beeson, 'l6, was at the col T lege this week-end, having received his discharge from Camp Hancock on the 28th. Richard J. M. Hobbs, 'O9, arrived at home the 30th. He is one of a number of Guilfordians who has done splendid service in France in reconstruction work both before and since the cease of the war. J. P. Garner, 'l6, is doing clerical work in Asheboro. He was the first Guili'ordians to volunteer £ol* army service, but was retained in camp on this side throughout the war period, having recently returned from Fort Riley, Texas. He expects to resume his studies in electrical engineering soon. DIG CROWD SEES MINSTREL (Continued from first page) by trees and an old negro mammy laborously washing and conversing with a lone banjoist. Soon others flocked in and a vigorous clog be gan accompanied by lively music by stringed instruments. In the midst of a fight over a crap game the preacher walked in, reproved the gamblers, and delivered a sermon which would convert the most unre pentant. Then followed a camp meeting hymn by the crowd and also a solo by Brother Moore, which proved to be more humorous than religious. Soon the shades of night fell and by an artful arrangement the moon shown out, owls blinked their baleful eyes and the family cat assuming his accustomed position in the window glared with brilliant eyes at the assembly. The old-time melodies that never grow tiresome were sung or played by the perform ers in the electric moonlight until the curtain fell to the strains of good night ladies. The audience filled the hall to overflowing and many of the late comers were not able to secure seats. It was probably the largest crowd which has ever witnessed a Guilford minstrel show. The net receipts were about $145, which will be a God-send to a hard pressed athletic association and puts it again on a solid financial basis. Much credit for the success of the affair is due to General Manager Prof. Brinton, Business Manager Ed. Carroll, with Raiford and Patterson as assistants, and Musical Director Joe Taylor. The very sincere thanks of the association is due Miss Kath erine Harmon for her untiring ef forts in developing and accompany ing the musical numbers. The asso ciation also wishes to thank all who helped in producing the costumes for the occasion. Rolin son put over an affirmative decision. They contended that the Philippinos are capable of governing themselves, and that the United States does not know what kind of government is best for them. H. N. Patterson and O. Stafford ably defended the nega tive by arguing that the Philippinos are not capable of self-government and that the present system makes safety more secure. C. Rolinson and O. Stafford, the two new men on the program, showed great improvement in debating. After the debate, H. N. Willard favored the society by telling some interesting experiences of his camp life. David White gave a good crit ic's report and society adjourned. COBLE AND MEBANE We give Special Attention to College Footwear. U stand in them.
