THE DES MOINES CONVENTION. (Continued from first page.) questions and explain any part of the exhibition. In this hall was also a writing room, information bureau, order desk and a postoffice. Miss Clara Henley, L. H. Barrett and A. I. Newlin, the Guilford Col lege representatives at this conven tion, are highly pleased with the journey to and from Des Moines. The North and South Carolina dele gates were given a special itrain at Asheville known as the "Carolina Special." Opportunity was given all these young men and women to be come better acquainted with many institutions. College rivalry was forgotten, and all joined into one fraternal band, losing individuality and gaining a few days of life that shall never be erased from the mem ory of a single one who made that pleasant journey. On the return trip two stops were made for sight seeing—one in Chicago far ten hours and one in Cincinnati for an equal length of time. CLARA HENLEY BRINGS MES SAGE FROM DES MOINES JONI ERENCE. At the Y. W. C. A. prayer meeting last Thursday evening Clara Henley talked; of the conference held at Des Moines. The keynote was the great need of the world today—the great need for workers in the field. Every state in the Union was represented by over two hundred delegates each, and there were speakers from all countries. Forty nationalities were represented. All the speakers made appeals and pleas for help. It is the duty as well as the privilege of stu dents to help them. The whole world is looking to America. Will she measure up to the great things the world is expecting? We, as loyal citizens, should makei it our sole purpose to work for the evangeliza tion of the world. All cannot go to the foreign field, but there is oppor tunity for work at home, and it is equally important. It is not where we are, but what we are doing that counts. We are all called to some field of usefulness and service. This should not be regarded a sacrifice, but rather finding our lives andj en tering upon the joys that will be given us by God. Sherwood Eddy said, "It is not so important how we shall make ,a living, as how we shall make a life." A great movement that has been begun among students is the Stu dent Volunteer Movement." We are now standing upon the threshold of a new generation," said Robert E. Speer, "and we must finish the task the first volunteers began. They are calling to us today—let us not fail them." Great stress was laid: upon the meaning of prayer. It was wonder ful to be in an audience of seven or eight thousand people bowed in sil ence before God. We at home may take advantage of prayer and thus receive the Holy Ghost. By prayer we can accomplish many things. GUILFORDIANS DISCUSS LEAGUE OP NATIONS (Continued from first page.) and a permanent secretarial force will form the nucleus of the organi zation. It is sometimes helpful, in work ing out a hard situation, to find a parallel case, said Prof. Anscombe. This he did by comparing the pres ent situation with the conditions that existed among the thirteen col onies at the close of the Revolution ary War. It was not without oppo sition ithat they entered into the union that became the United States. Prof. Maddox's point of argument was that the United States would be looked upon as an enemy if she did not enter the League. With modern inventions the would so close together some kind of League is necessary. Miss Edwards and Miss Beech each made a few remarks concern ing the League, and: .then the meet ing was left open for discussion. The student body and faculty of the college will vote on the four propositions next Tuesday, when a similar vote will be taken in col leges and universities all over the United States, and th*> returns tab ulated and made public by an inter collegiate committee made up by the editors of the Harvard, Columbia.
