January 26, 1921 HIGH SCHOOL BASKET BALL Local High School Teams Success ful in Both Contests. The boys' basket ball team of the local High School defeated Bessemer High School on the College floor January 19th and the girls' team la ter in the week was successful in a contest with the High School team from Burlington. The latter game while lacking the speed of the boys' contest was the more interesting and the more closely contested of the two. Stewart at forward and Wakefield at center played the most aggressive ball for Guilford. In the game with Bessemer the Guilford boys succeeeded in rolling up a considerable margin in points but in playing the visiting team was decidedly superior. So l'ar this is the most successful season which the High School has experienced for several years. At present there is a total of three vic tories and one defeat by a small mar gin credited to the team. The sched ule contains several of the fastest High School teams in the state and if the local boys succeed in trimming these teams they will stand high in the race for state honors. BASKET BALL SQUADS (Continued from page 1) ty-eight games. Three of these games have already been played. The first game between the Indians, whose line-up includes, Stout, R. F. (Capt.) Gragg, 1.f.. The Nationals gained the victory with a >2ore of 16 to 14. The 3rd scheduled game was post poned while the fourth game was played as scheduled. This third game of the series resulted in a defeat for the Tigers by the Athlet ics with a score of 14 to 9. The line-up for the Athletics is composed of Harris, r.f.; M. Shore, l.f. CAMPUS GATE BEING REBUILT Old students and friends of the college will be glad to know that the gate is being constructed again at the entrance to the campus. The former gate erected by the class of 1909, having witnessed many years of wind and rain, was ever faithful to its trust and guarded well the college domain until the end in 1919. And now the new gate, being re built by the loyal Guilfordians of 'O9, is almost ready to take up the work of the old and point out with pride th'e best road of all to knowledge. Student Associations of the Y. M. C. A. are organized in 764 coleges and universities in the country. The Y. W. C. A. has 750 college organi zations. —Exchange. REMEDY FOR CROWDED COLLEGES "Remedies never come until after the disease." declared Mr. Bryan in regard to the inability of educational institutions to handle properly the vast numbers which come to them. "We may feel sure that thinking peo ple will not see our colleges and universities decline for lack of funds or on account of antiquated systems of education One proposed remedy is the establishment of junior colleges to take care of those just starting to college. Ano+her is the extension of high school to make it cover the first two years of the college course. There is a growing tendency in favor of the high-school work in this manner, and, if it is adopted twice the present number of students can finish their education at college with out making the colleges any larger than they are today."—Exchange.
