The result cf our basket ball season thus far has not stamped out this impres sion—it has in fact greatly exagger ated the impression. Just a glance at the bare figures, four defeats against one victory, does not develop a very beautiful picture. Then the critic, to clinch his argu ment falls back to the foot ball seasons of the past few years. The greater part of the total of games played have been lost. And again the question is asked, "Why is it that Guilford does not win at least half of her games?" Friends of the col lege would like to have an unbiased explanation of the cause of this fall back in this student activity. Many people do not know that the man power of Guilford College from which the foot ball, basket ball, base ball and tennis teams are drawn, is the weakest, numerically, of any College from which the foot ball, bas ket ball, baseball and tennis teams are drawn, is the weakest, numeric ally, of any college in North Caro lina, that attempts such schedules as Guilford arranges. In Basket ball and base ball Guilford competes with institutions eight, ten and twelve times as great. Nearly half of the boys must take an active part in the daily practice to produce a team. Some one may be interested to know just what effect this strain on the man power of the institution has been during the past few years. The story is easily told in the form of a brief resume of the past foot ball season. Six games were includ ed in the schedule; one tie, two vic tories and three defeats was the re sult. What kind of material was found in this small school for a foot ball team ? A bunch of high school stars ? No. Where then did they get their foot ball training before coming to Guilford ? Kicking "white flints" and "nigger head" rocks over the hills of central and western Carolina, and tin cans over the sand dunes of eastern Caro lina and Virginia. Many of the members of the squad never knew the touch cf the "pig skin" of the gridiron until after they became part of Guilford College. Of last years Varsity, only one man had ever been in a foot ball uniform until after coming to Guilford. The Cap tain of the team played in the first football game that he ever saw. The year's basket ball squad has had slightly more training before coming to college than the foot ball squad of the past season. The Cap tain of the team however, is the only man who has won a better in that sport. Three of the five regulars who have played in the last three games had never taken part in an intercol legiate basket ball game until this year. The scrubs are for the most part, players that have been devel oped here at Guilford. Then friends and critics at Guil ford, are our athletic efforts worth while ? Has our coach done his duty ? Eevery student is made to believe that he has just as good stuff with in him as any other student, and that he has just as good a chance to show it as any other. As a result Athelet ic teams at Guilford are drawn from more than ninety precent of the of the college, while in larger institutions only about ten percent of the students affect. directly, the make up of he Varsity team. Some one then is working and many are being benefitted. In spite o cf any temporary set backs that may face us we have as good reasons to be proud of our athletic record as any other college in the state. Y. M. C. A. PRAYER MEETING Leader Talks of Discontent. Despite the fact that the attend ance at Y. M. C. A. prayer meeting was small, the meeting was a good one. Murray White, leader for the evening, spoke on the subject of dis content. There are two things that cause discontent in life. One is a lack of harmony with one's envirorl ment. The other is dissatisfaction with one's present opportunities. The first may be overcome to a great ex tent; the second may be put out of our lives completely. One's environment may be very disagreeable. The soul can gain strength only by overcoming some thing. A great part of the strength of life is gained by getting into har mony with our surroundings. If we try to understand our environment or adapt ourselves to it, we will avoid friction and will join that "beauty born of power and that sympathy born of love." As for our opportunities, we can make a successful life out of what ever is given us to work with. Pres ent opportunities if rightly used, are good enough for us. God has given each of us a special work that no one else can do. And he has given us the necessary equipment to accom plish our tasks. If we will take life as God gives it, and not as we would like it, and then make the best of it, we will reach the goal that is set for us. THE GUILFORDIAN I J. M.
