MERIDITH RECITES On Friday evening April Bth, an audience in Memorial Hall was charmed with the recital given by Mrs. Angelina Wocd Meridith, mezzo soprano singer, and Gracatt Frazier accompanying her at the piano. The singer's mastery over a wide range of songs was displayed in the pro gram which contained numbers in Old Scotch, Old English, Irish, French and German. The following is the program as given— 1. a. A Song of Sunshine—A. Goring Thomas. b. Three Fishers Went Sailing.— John Hullah. 3. Caller Herin'—Old Scotch. d. How's My Boy—Sidney Homer 2. a. Orpheus with His Lute — Arthur Sullivan. b. Recitations and Aria from "Orpheo.''—Gluck. 3. a. The Three Ravens —Old Eng lish. b. Kerry Dance (Irish) —Molloy c. Mutterseelenallein—German Folk Song. d. Vous Dansez, Marquise (French) —Lemair. 4. a. Nymphs and Shepherds— Purcell. b. Fairies' Lullaby—Needham. c. The Legend—David B. Johnstone d. All in the April Evening— Diack. e. Dainty Dorothea—Reginald De- Koven. f. The Awakening of Spring—. Teresa del Riego. In number one, parts "b" and "c" were the most enjoyed, probably be cause of the few words of explana tion which preceeded them. "Caller" is the Scotch word for "fresh" and in "c" there was a vivid word picture of the old Scothcman crying his "Caller Herrin" for sale. The English translation of number two (b) was sung. In both parts, (a) and (b) the words of explana tion given were such that the audi ence could more readily appreciate the interpretation placed on these numbers by the singer. The German music is rich in folk songs, of which Mutterseelenal lien is a typical example. This in English is "Utterly alone." "Vous Dansez, Mai-quise" was typ ical of the grace and rythm which characterizes the French music. Numbers four was enjoyed im mensely though parts (a), (e) and (f) bear special notice. Throughout the entire recital Mrs. Meridith's control was perfect. Mrs. Meridith was a former in stuctor in this institution and now resides near the college campus.
