(Continued from page 1) A synopsis of the play is as fol lows: Act I.—ln Mrs. Delaine's kitchen. "Gyp" and Mrs. Delaine are pre paring for the "cooking club" which is to meet with the school teacher Rebecca, the adopted daughter of Mrs. Delaine. (Rebecca had been found 18 years before in the arms of a dead man at the foot of the hollow tree shown in Act II.) Katie Conner, the servant of Mrs. Roke man. the wealthy lady at the top of the hill, to whom she had not spoken for 20 years, comes to borrow a wrench. "Crazy Meg" enters and is shown to an adjoining room. Soon the girls enter and begin making a cake which they call "Rebecca's Tri umph." Miss Clarissa Codman reads a love letter. During the process of cooking a runaway is seen along the road and Rebecca goes to rescue Mrs. Rokeman. and brings her into the kitchen. Meanwhile Rebecca has lost her ring, which was around her neck when she was found and which has engraved on the inside, "Rebec ca." This cannot be found. Mrs. Rokeman thinks she recognizes a song by Meg, but is deceived when she sees her. Act 11. A grove. The girls have a picnic and find a note in the hollow tree which Mrs. Rokeman takes—a clue to her lost sister's husband—. Clarissa Codman finds a love letter which thrills her, but when she meets Theophilus Mon tague, this supposed lover, whom she has never seen, is only one of the club girls. Act 111. Parlor in Mrs. Rokeman's home. Mrs. Rokeman is entertaining the club. When the cake baked in Act I. is cut, Rebecca's ring is found, which Mrs. Rokeman recognizes. Mrs. Delaine comes there for the first time in 20 years and persuades Mrs. Rokeman to look for her sister whom she drove away from home years ago because she married a man that she herself loved. Meg enters and throwing off her disguise is re vealed as Clara, the sister of Mrs. Rokeman, also she is Rebecca's moth er, it being Clara's husband who was found dead with Rebecca in arms 18 years before. The club girls agree that it is truly "Rebecca's Triumph." Characters. Gyp, a colored girl—Edna Raiford. Mrs. Delaine, a widow—Grace Stone. Katie Konner an Irish girl—Hazel Richardson. Rebecca, a foundling.—Marianna White. Meg. a vagabond,—Dovie Hayworth Club Girls Dora Gaines Hope Motley Sadie Moorell Marion Ward Nellie Dunbar Marie Tyson Edna Stephens ..Lucille Cardwell. Maria Gray..lsla Willis Thompson. Gussie Green... Hattie Poindexter Jennie Woodman Edna Been Alice Leeds—Emma Leigh Hoover Grace Greenwood.. Evelyn Henley. Clarissa Codman, a Spinster,—Nell Carrol. Mrs. Rokeman, a wealthy lady,— Elizabeth Yates. All the players acquitted them selves well but special mention should be made of Nell Carroll in the role of Miss Codman. She entered thor oughly into the spirit of her part and took her audience by storm. Marianna White in the title role would certainly have inspired the small boy to say "Gee. if that's the teacher I'm going back to school.'" The most difficult part, that of Meg the disguised sister of Mrs. Rokeman, was ably presented by Dovie Hay worth who surprised even her most ardent admirers by the skill and un derstanding with she interpreted her part. Elizabeth Yates as Mrs. Roke man and Grace Stone as Mrs. Delaine played their parts well. Hazel Rich ardson, as Mrs. Rokeman's maid, did not provoke many laughs but she proved an excellent foil for Edna Rai ford as the jovial Gyp. The latter was irresistible in makeup and ac tion. Hope Motley should be men tioned for her part in livening up the group scenes. She could always be counted on to keep things from dragging. The new scenery, built and paint ed for this play, will be a valuable addition to the Guilford stage prop erties. The lumber was donated by an interested friend and the work done by relays of students under the direction of Professor Balderston. To Miss Roberts, Coach and Stage Director, most of the credit for the unusual success of the entertainment is due. With tireless energy, infinite tact, patience and cheerfulness - she not only coached the players but at tended to the multitudinous details of stage setting. In acknowledgement of their appreciation the cast, at the conclusion of the play, presented her with a beautiful bunch of roses.
