Member of Intercollegiate Press Association EDITORIAL "The Guilfordian is glad to have the privilege of sending to its read ers a bigger paper. We believe the insert truly tells the life of Guilford. Last week the campus and its ar rangements were featured. This week special attention is being given to the Literary Societies, chapel ex ercises and the Library. Other phas es of college life will be found in future issues. ♦ * * Guilford College was very glad to welcome to her campus during the past week end, the teachers and stu dents of high schools from all parts of North Carolina. A finer group of guests could hardly have been in vited. The group was made up of declaimers and reciters who had won out in their respective high schools, and some of the best high school ath letes in North Carolina. PROFESSOR WHITE AT TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL Professor White visited Trinity High School Tuesday and spoke to the school. Conferences with the members of the senior class wei-e also held in an effort to interest them in continuing their education in college. Y. M. C. A. PRESIDENT GIVES A TALK ON "CHARACTER" The Y. M. C. A. was led Thursday evening, by Herman Raiford, who dis cussed as his topic "Character." The speaker gave a very interest ing talk on the fundamental growth and development of character. SOCIAL SERVICE WORK First Hand Information Concern ing the Nature of This Work, Given By Lady Members of Faculty. Y. W. C. A., Thursday evening. April 21, was led by the lady mem bers of the faculty. They had chosen for their subject Social Ser vice. Each speaker having had some personal experience in this work told the nature of her work and some of the problems which confront social service workers. ANNUAL H. S. CONTEST (CoNTIUED FROM PAGE ONE ) XIII. James N. O'Neil, Henderson —The True Granduer of Nations. Final Contest Saturday Evening. The Tenth Annual Interscholastic Declamation- Contest was held in Me morial Hall Saturday evening, April the twenty-third. No contest of higher merit has ever been held at Guilford College. The contestants represented eight high schools of the State and great credit is due to these institutions which were so well rep resented. \ The Philomathean and Zatasian Literary Societies presented a set of books to Jennie Howard Cannon, of Guilford High School, to whom the judges awarded first place among the girls. Her recitation was enti tled "Flosie Lane's Marriage" and it was delivered in a very creditable manner. To George Poe, of the Winston- Salem High School, the winner among the boys, a gold watch was present ed. This prize was given by the Websterian and Henry Clay Literary Societies. "The Supposed Speech of John Adams" was the title of Mr. Poe's oration. Three musical selections were ren dered during the eveing, adding much to the evening's program, Miss Mot ley's solo was especially enjoyed. The entire program for the even ing was as follows: I. A Scene on the Battlefield— Carl Montgomery, Pleasant Garden. 11. Two Homecomings—Sarah Hunt. Greensboro. 111. Education, —Ernest Cude, Friendship. Instrumental Solo—Grace Stone. IV. Flossie Lane's Marriage—Jen nie Howard Cannon, Guilford. V. Supposed Speech of John Adams —George Poe. Winston-Salem. VI. Americanism—Katherine Mar tin, Burlington. Vocal Solo. "My Laddie," Hope Motley. VII. The True Granduer of Na tions—James N. O'Neil, Henderson. VIII. Diddie's Books—Mildred Davis, Jamestown. IV. America's Problems—Giles G. Nicholson. Burlington. The judges for the evening were Dr. L. L. Hobbs, Mrs. Raymond Bin ford, and Professor Mark C. Mills. After Dr. Hobbs awarded the prizes to the winners in the declamation contest Dovie Hayworth, president of the Young Women's Athletic Asso ciation, presented to the captain of the girl's basket-ball team of Pomo na High School a silver trophy cup. And Algie Newlin, representing the Young Men's Athletic Association of Guilford College Presented a Silver cup to Theodore Koenig, captain of the Greensboro High School Track Team after the contest a reception was given in the Library in honor of the High School representatives.
