We thought that the Wheeler fam ily in "Clarence" was very impolite. What a shocking moral effect such serong language as "Shut up!' may have on the youth of the college and community. • • * wasted by the Sophmores in going to the store and otherwise using their Senior privileges on Senior- Sohpomore Day would, if converted into electricity, light Greensboro for the summer. We propose that the following shall come before the House: Oatmeal or cream of wheat shall not be served to college students more than, once every two weeks, and no one cereal shall be served twice a week. We believe that the voting element of he college population will support this bill. Write to your Congrssman at once in this regard. * ♦ * "You're delicate, Professor," the stu dent said, And your physical frame needs rest; You can lie in bed and cut first class, Your students think it best. "You're off, young man," the Prof, replied, I was rising before you were born, My constitution's strong, and it'll do yours good To rise betimes in the morn." * • To say nothing of following "Clar ence" with the follies on Sunday Take It From The Air NOT only music, but news, speeches, mes sages of every sort, are today being picked out of the air. "How has this come about?" we ask. The new impetus given to radio development may be definitely associated with the develop ment of the high power vacuum tube, for that made broadcasting possible. And the power tube originated from a piece of purely theoreti cal research, which had no connection with radio. When a scientist in the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Company found that electric current could be made to pass through the highest possible vacuum and could be varied according to fixed laws, he established the prin ciple of the power tube and laid the foundation for the "tron" group of devices. These devices magnify the tiny telephone currents produced by the voice and supply them to the antenna, which broadcasts the messages. At the receiving end, smaller "trons", in turn, magnify the otherwise im perceptible messages coming to them from the receiving antenna. Great accomplishments are not picked out of the air. Generally, as in this case, they grow from one man's insatiable desire to find out the "how" of things. Scientific research discovers the facts. Prac tical applications follow in good time.
