W. C. A. Thurs day evening, October 5, 1922. This meeting was held especially for the benefit of the new girls, and the organization of the Y. M. C. A. was explained in terms of the three sides of the blue triangle. The subject was discussed from five view points; Y. W. C. A. in other lands; the three purposes and the three workers; body, soul, and mind; and God, others and ourselves. The speakers emphasized the fact that the three sides of the triangle represent the following: the base, God; the right side, others: and the left side, ourselves. , Y. M. C. A. Notes "How Jesus met life problems" was the theme of Spot Taylor's dis ussion at the Y. M. C. A. Thursday evening, October 5. Prefacing his remarks with the second chapter of Luke, Mr. Taylor reviewed the birth and childhood of Christ and his entrance upon the ministry, stressing particularly the temptations which he met and over came. Marvin Shore, H. L. Macon, Dew ey Crews, Frank Casey and Russel Branson followed Mr. Taylor with brief talks on various phases of Christ's life. 0P Which Type of Research is of Greatest Value? A stove burns too much coal. A man familiar with the principles of combustion and heat radiation makes experiments which indicate desirable changes in design. That is research. You want to make a ruby in a factory, a real ruby, indistinguishable by any test from the natural stone. You begin by analyzing rubies chemically and physi cally. Then you make rubies just as nature did. Your rubies are the result of research —another type of research. While melting up your chemicals and experimenting with high temperatures, you begin to wonder how hot the earth must have been millions of years ago, and what were the forces at play that made this planet what it is. Your investigation leads you far from rubies and causes you to formulate theories to explain how the earth, how the whole solar system was created. That would be research of a still dif ferent type. Research of all three types is conducted in the labo ratories of the General Electric Company. But it is the third type—pioneering into the unknown—that means most in the long run, even though undertaken with no practical benefit in view. For example, the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Company arc exploring matter with X-rays in order to discover not only how the atoms in different substances are arranged but how the atoms themselves are built up. The more you know about a substance, the more you can do with it. This work may enable scientists to answer more definitely the question: Why is iron magnetic? Then the elec trical industry will take a greater step forward than can be made in a century of experimenting with existing electrical apparatus. You can add wings and stories to an old house. But to build a new house, you must begin with the foundation. G em © ral®El © o tr i c General Office O © HIT! jP Si Schenectad y. N. Y. THE GUILFORDIAN Day Students Enjoy Moonlight Picnic The moonlight nights of last week were too beautiful to be resisted by a group of Guilford studnets. Hence on Wednesday evening about four teen community boys and girls under the chaperonage of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ballenger, set forth to enjoy the early hours in the moonlit grove behind Professor Davis' home. Advance guards had been sent out ill the afternoon to gather wood and locate a place for a bon-fire. Soon a raging fire was making life warm for eager hot dog roasters. How ever. after several burnt fingers, and lost weiners, there was a sufficient number roasted to supply the party. The frying of eggs and the boiling of coffee was a matter of a few min utes, and presently picnickers sat down to partake of hot dogs, eggs, pickles, sandwiches and cake. After the supper had vanished, the remaining part of the evening was devoted to singing songs, playing games and walking in the moonlight. Misses Flora Pike and Esther Rees from Snow Camp were the week-end guests of Nellie Allen. Misses Vera Fallow, Virginia Os borne, Ruth Pearson and Lois Rab ev spent the week-end at Queen's College, Charlotte, attending the Y. W. C. A. training council. Beulah Norman spent the week end with Joe Mock. SOCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ENGRAVING • i (Earnlttta Engrailing (Uontpatty ;l 214 North Elm Strleet, Greensboro, N. C. SE $ * t DAVID WHITE, Pres. J. W.
