Miss Osborne Speaks at Y. W. C. A Miss Louise Osborne as leader of Y. W. Thursday evening gave a brief sketch of the life of Ai Sato San. the little Japanese girl that the Y. W. has adopted. She still lives in her home in Japan under the care of j Miss Sharpless, a former teacher of Guilford, who is a missionary there. Each year the Y. W. C. A. sends j enough money to keep her in school, : helping to educate her so that she may fulfil her desire of becoming ! a missionary in her own countrv. Advisory Board .Alumni and Facluty Represented In Joint Conference (Continued from page 1) goal about four hundred thousand dollars, to be raised as soon as pos sible. The endowment thus raised will he used to establish the finan cial standing of the college and to maintain or increase the support of the teachers unless otherwise speci fied by the donors. The campaign committee is com posed of members of the board of trustees, of the alumni association, the advisory committee and of the faculty of the college. President Binford presented sev eral matters to the meeting "Upon which he wanted advice, and, by the use of diagrams, showed how that in the past twenty years the college had increased the income of the college and raised the salary sched ule. He also showed that during the first eight years of the same period the preparatory department had been the larger part of the college, then for the next eight years the two had run about parrallel, while in recent years the college department has shown a marked tendency to eliminate entirely the preparatory de partment. The business of the afternoon session was concluded early in the afternoon. The special committees on campaign went into session im mediately and for some time worked on plans for action. Following this the whole group, at least as many as could stay, were entertained at tea on the porch of Founders' Hall. THE G-UILFORDIAN Will Refurnish East Parlor. At a recent meeting of the advisory committee it was decided to raise funds to refurnish East Parlor. The members present at this meeting were ' Mrs. Mary E. Mendenhall Davis, and j' Mrs. Roxie White, of Guilford Col lege; Mrs. Sadie Lindley, Miss Mary M. Petty, Miss Gertrude Menden- j hall, of Greensboro; Mrs. Mary D. Cox, High Point. The library committee met Friday j afternoon to decide upon the new books to be bought for the library, and to approve of the library bud get for the current year. New Pastor to Arrive Soon. Mr. Joseph Peele, a former Guil- j ford College resident, has been se-! ! cured as pastor for the Friends Meet ing here. He is expected to arrive about November 1, coming by auto- j mobile from California with his fam ily. • * Object Lesson In Tapestries The class in household decorating are studying modern wall decoration at present. They visited Mine. Hoff- j matin's cottage last week and were very much interested in a valuable Gobelin tapestry whose history Mme. Hoffmann gave them. Two pieces of Egyptian tapestr) and two Japanese paintings on vel vet attracted much attention also. • • • Home Economics Classes Study \ Practical Problems The seniors in deities are studying the nutritive value of foods. As a] practical problem, each took an av erage serving from each of three meals at Founders' or New Garden and worked the caloric value out in | detail. They were found to contain the right number of calories. The next problem is to be nutri tive ratio, and the students will de-1 termine whether the meals are well balanced or not. The second year cooking class i held an exhibit last week of 100-eal oric portions of various foods for the benefit of all Home Economic stud- j ents. The ( lass in household manage ment has been working on household budgets. Representatives from the lass have interviewed Mrs. Binford and Mrs. Dann, who have promised jto give practical suggestions from time to time. . . . Faculty Entertained. 'Modern Apostles' Theme of Summerbell Lectures Elon College, N. C., Oct. 17. — Dr. Martyn Summerbell, of Lake mont, N. Y., delivered his annual series of lectures to the student bodv Oct. 15-17. The general theme of I his lectures for this year was the dis cussion of Modern Apostles. The I men whom he characterized as such. j were John Wycliffe, John Huss and John Calvin.
