That a Republican victory in the coining election would be to the best interest of the United States." was tlie question for discussion in the Web sterian liall. Friday evening. May 20. This was the question that any num ber of the Websterian Society could speak on. the speaker being at liberty to select the side that he desired to prove. Seven of the society members responded to the opportunity. They were as follows: Robert Ilodgin, Olin Sink, ii'aham Allen, Leslie Murphy, Harry Deifny. Alton Tew and Bradley Ward. After the contest the judges retired from the hall only to return in a few minutes to award the annual im provement medal to Bradley Ward, the winner of the evening. Paul Jassimides, who. according to the society's records, lias been the most consistant member of the society received the annual con sistency prize given by Mr. W. L. liudd. of Burlington. The Society was very glad to wel come as visitors I)r. Smith, of the local community and Clifton Pearson. Five fresh men spoke 011 the query: Resolved, That the constitution of the United States should be so amended as to pro vide for a uniform divorce law. Currie Spivey, Howard Cannon, and Eugene Hire, speaking on the affirmative side of tlie query, proved the necessity of a uniform divorce law by showing that the present situation cannot be reme died by any other method. Ilale .New line and Luther Francis, negative speakers, emphasized tlie fact that such a law would infringe 011 state rights. The following officers were elected to serve the society: President, Byron Ha worth; vice-president, A. Scott Park er: secretary. Walter Davis; treasurer. Kverette Beanion: assistant secretary, Glenn Boose; censor, Currie Spivey; chaplain. Patterson Ilutcliens; sergeant at arms, Barclay Newlin. The theme of the program was "Folk- Lore," and the following program was given: Folk-Lore, by Annie Wagoner. Legend of Eastern North Carolina, by Kathleen Reynolds. A Louisiana Folk Tale, by Julia Ver ncr. Impromptu Piano Solo, Jessie Me- Bane. The last number was a fashion show in which Virginia Ragsdale and Adalia Futrell represented the old-fashioned girls. Elizabeth Braswell the modern girl of today, and Laura RqDinger the girl of P.irio. At this time the improvement prize for Ihe freshman irirl was presented to Gertrude Blow. Officers for next year were elected and they will be installed this week. Those who will serve are: President, Sal lie Wilkins; vice-president, Espie Neece; secretary, Josephine Paul; treasurer. Nell Thomas; marshal. Mary Alice Futrell. ZAY NOTES President Doris Joyner Vice-President Berta Hollady Secretary Mildred Kimrey Marshal Catherine Cox At its regular meeting 011 Friday night, tlie Zatasian Literary Society elected, and installed its officers for the fall term. They are as follows: President, Doris Joyner; vice-president, Berta Hollady: secretary, Mildred Kim rey; marshal, Catherine Cox. As there was no program for the evening the society adjourned after a short business session. THE NEW DISCIPLINE Little Polly Finders Sat among the cinders Warming her pretty toes. THE GUILFORDIAN THE ANNUAL ZAY-PHIL RECEPTION IS SUCCESS "Tripping Around the World" is the Title of Unique Program Presented By Zays Much to the surprise of the mem bers of the Philoinathean literary So ciety, they were invited to attend a call meeting of the Zatasian Literary So ciety last Tuesday evening- When the real purpose of the meeting was dis covered. the I'liils realized that they were being entertained h.v a splendid program, entitled. "Tripping Around the World." The tirst number was "Dixie." by Berta llollady and Julia Wolff. They delighted the visitors with a Minuet dance. Carrie Teague and Sarah Jin nette took us on to "Scotland" with the "Highland Fling." We visited "Spain" with Sara Edgerton and she did a Spanish dance very gracefully. From there Mae llollady took us with her into "Japan" where we heard Hilda Harris and Annie Kate Neal discuss the customs of their land and coin pure them with ours. From there we journeyed on to "Ha waii" where Mabel Sliipp in a pictur esque costume gave a Hawaiian dance. The last number was a visit to "Alaska" and when we arrived there, they informally dismissed us with lit tle ceremony and we enjoyed an Alas kan reception. While there they served us with delicious Alaska cream and wafers. Following the program, an in formal social was held until nine o'clock when the guests very reluctant ly departed, being convinced that all call meetings of society are not bore some. *+* GLEE CLUB MAKES ENVIABLE SHOWING AT HOME CONCERT (Continued from Page One) The program follows: PART OXK 1.
