We would like to reintroduce the "Fighting Quakers." Poor Ca tawba ! Rachel Parrish, Grott Hoyle and Marshall exhibited a rare brand of football Saturday and that is no re flection on the rest of the eleven. We noticed quite a few High Point scouts at the game Saturday. Guess the out-of-state squad needed a little introduction, etc., being largely new in this locality. Do any of the strong supporters of the present form of literary so cieties have an explanation for the fact that the freshmen are slow about joining? We do! A student of Columbia Univer- j sity, and ex-faculty member, writes that "the old- form of literary so ciety with debates is dead except in small southern colleges and in the Middle West. They have been su-; perceded by open forums and par liamentary bodies." (This was un solicited.) We Progress At the present writing, Guilford students are enjoying the new and thrilling experiences of modernized rules. For one month the new plan will lie in effect and after one month it will either be continued or recalled—that is up to the stu dent body! We believe that the student body of Guilford will prove itself worthy of the new code, which is largely the outcome of thoughtful work, under the leadership of Mrs. An drews, dean of women, and Sal lie Wilkins, president of the women's student government. We believe that the student body will appreciate the fact that they are being treated like college stu dents and will respond with a co-op erative spirit. We hope and be lieve this. One of the old guard professional gripers on the campus .said today, "Anybody that doesn't co-operate with those new rules ought to be shot. Soon we won't have any thing' to gripe about." So even the irreconcilables ;.re lining up behind what this paper believes to be one of tlie most far-reaching events of recent Guilford history. ! atisfaction of the student body is one of the greatest advertise ments a college can have. Guilford, this year, with an excellent faculty, coach and dean of men and women, has reached the point where every one is optimistic. In the past, the faculty, the ad ministration, the deans and the stu dent government have never made the headway in the establishment of a sound social life that has been made in the one short month of the present school year. We want to express our appreciation for the in fluence and work of Mrs. Andrews. A glance at the new regulations, which are published elsewhere in this paper, shows that good, sound judgment and not just a desire to have "liberty" has pervaded the new trial plan. Four years ago a student had one date a week with permission from the dean of women. But without permission we would hate to estimate the frequency. In the course of four years these prep school rules have given way to college regulations. The result will be a saner social attitude on the part of the student body and there will be little to be regretted. HAFIZ TO A GUILFORDI AN (Apologies to R. Kipling) My son, if the dean shall approach thee— And 'tis not to comment on thy clothes, But to ask thee, "What hast thou been doing Beware —for lie probably KNOWS. My son, if temptation assail thee To pull si sliort date with thy friend, Think well —for the pleasure is fleet ing. And a "campus" is surely the end. .If thou cravest perfection in conduct, Trust not to thine inner light. It may shine where the law does not follow, And not Good, but the Custom is Right. Independence of thought is admired In the prophet from over the sea; But raising its head in the ranks Is abhorred by the Powers that be. STUDENT BODY HEARS MISS WILKINS SPEAK (Continued front Page One) though there may be less fanatics among the group. Some students seem to have the idea that they learn everything there is to be learned while in college and that they have no need of further education after receiving their diplomas, but, the speaker concluded, "We do not leave college as finished products, but rather as men and women in the making." ■ n . ♦V — ——— ♦> RAINBOW CAFE LUNCH Opposite Jefferson Standard 101 West Market Street "GOOD THINGS TO EAT" , #, 14 Tell Them You're from Guilford GUILFORD LUMBER MFG.
