March 14, 1928 POST-SEASON GAME WITH "T MEN WON Greensboro "Y" Team Yields Its Early Lead to Quaker Victory of 27-18 MOORE IS HIGH SCORER Last Tuesday evening in the wood-box the Quaker five smothered the Greens boro aggregation with a 27-18 victory, avenging the previous defeat suffered at the hands of the Y quint. The visitors started off with a rush, and when the smoke cleared, the score stood 8-2 favoring the Y. Tliey main tained their lead through the first half, which ended 15-12. The Y quint succeeded in securing only three points in the last period, while the Quakers shot from every angle. At the last of the second half, the game became a rough and tumble affair, which was much enjoyed by all present. Moore led the Quaker scoring with ten points. Woodward was high scorer for the Y, chalking up 7. Lineup: Guilford (27) Greensboro Y (18) Griffin (5) Houch (11) R. F. Haworth (4) Eaton (2) L. F. Moore (10) Woodward (7) Center Coble (2) Routh R. QUAKER SPORTS PAUL COLTRANE Paul is a product of Guilford High School. He was a member of that team when they won the western champion ship. This is Paul's third season with the Fighting Quakers, and he has been getting better every year. Last year he served the squad as captain. His skill at running guard, and his accu racy at sinking long ones has been the deciding factor in bringing home more than one string of bacon. He also holds two records, one of being high score man and the other of having played the most times during games. His ability as both an offensive and defensive player had no small part in the smooth working of the team. Next year he should be one of the mainstays on the squad. ROBERT B. GRIFFIN Bol> has been 011 the basketball squad for four years now. He is rather small, and his presence is bothersome, espe cially to the opposing team. His spe cialty is breaking up passes, and mak ing them count as points. Bob is the only member of the team to graduate this spring. The Fighting Quakers will certainly miss Bob's fight and scrap ping next season. FLOWERS 1 { | Sykes Florists, Inc. I TOMMY HADLEY | I College Representative f I ♦ GEORGE A. YELVERTON George is also known as "Two Pint." One referee also identified him as "The little fellow who came in last." George has been playing on the Guilford five for two seasons, and with a little more experience he should become one of the outstanding guards on the squad. He has played in most of the games this season and will probably do even bet ter next year. HIGH SCHOOL TROUPE GIVES CONCERT HERE Program Is Enthusiastically Received; String Quarette Outstanding Num ber of the Evening MILLER DIRECTS FOR EVENING March 5. —The 70-piece orchestra of the Greensboro High School presented an extensive program before a large au dience in Memorial Hall, Monday night. For the first group of music the play ers were arranged as an orchestra; after the intermission they seated themselves in the formation of a band and played band music. Between the two groups Miss Imogene Boyle, teacher of violin in the Greensboro Schools, directed a string quartette which played "Air," by Ponchon. This was the outstanding suc cess of the evening. The audience re ceived it most enthusiastically. The COMMERCIAL NATIONAL BANK J. ELWOOD COX, President Sb V. A. J. IDOL, Vice-President and Trust Officer jHHPPS®SraSIL C. 11. MARRINEB, Cashier W- T. I J, PROMISING OUTLOOK FOR TRACK SEASON Pate and Coble, Big Men of Last Year, and Six Letter Men Working With Many Others FIVE MEETS ARE PLANNED Present indications are that this will be the most successful track season Guilford has ever enjoyed. For several years interest in this sport remained at a very low ebb, but last year Dr. Ott created a new interest, which is still growing. Last spring the team made a very creditable showing for its first year. Two of the men, Pate and Coble, placed in the state meet in Greensboro. Both these men, along with six other letter men, are back. They will prob ably perform as follows: S. Moore, dashes; Coble and R. Ayers, mile and two miles; E. Moore, shot and discus; Smith, javelin; Holt, half mile and dis cus; Chandler, hurdles. It is probable that Ragan, who was a member of the Earlham track squad last season, will be eligible. There are also several men who gained experience in the cross-country runs last fall. From 20 to 25 men, or about three times as many as last year, report three afternoons a week for regular workouts. There are several promising candidates among this group. The plans for the inter-class meet are already under way. Each of the classes has elected a representative to help Dr. Ott make a successful meet. Ribbons are to be awarded the individuals finish ing in the first three places in each event. The class which wins the meet will have the points applied to the con test for the inter-class athletic cham pionship. Interest in the meet is running high and there is much speculation as to the result. Following is a complete schedule: Inter-class, March 24. Catawba (here), April 4. High Point (here), April 21. State meet, May 4 and 5. Catawba (there), May 12. Page Three
