Page six Basketball Season Opens Against Strong White Oak Y.M.C.A. The Guilford Cagers opened their 194(5 basketball season last night in a tilt with the White Oak Y.M.C.A. at the latters gym. Picking a strong team for their first opposition the Quakers hope to get In good shape In perparation for the tough inter scholastic schedule ahead. The White Oak aggregation showed their power with a one sided victory over Draper to the tune of 58-35 last week, and should prove the starting testing strength of the school quintet. Due to unavoidable circumstances the scheduled tilt which was to be played against the University of North Carolina on December 2 was canceled. However the cagers show ed their pre-season form two weeks ago by eking out a 40-48 victory over Burtner Furniture of Greensboro in an unofficial .scrimmage game. Standouts for the Quakers were "Bunk" Leonard who led the home team scoring, and his brother Bill Leonard, who is a promising Fresh man at center position. Other men who turned in good jobs in last night's fracas were Brooks Hansard, center; Jimmy Mann, for ward: A 1 Poggioli, guard; George Balls, guard; Bill Byatt. guard; Wes Imnan, guard: Dick Hall, for ward: Jack Arzonieo, guard: and Ben Weston, forward. So far there are just two scheduled contests to be played off before the Christmas holidays, those being a re turn engagement against White Oak "Y" on December 13, and a home game with the McCrary Eagles on December 16. Miss Alice Dixon who spent three years in Japan teaching at the Friends Girls School in Tokyo related her experiences and views of the present situation. At the pervious meeting, John Bradshaw and David Stafford led a discussion on "Thunder Over China." Both were stationed in China with the American Friends Service Committee during the war. They told the group of several of the external and internal troubles there. Among the points reviewed was the clash between Chiang-Ki- Shek's government and the Com munists. Veterans' Administration estimat ed the veteran population at nearly 17,900,000 last October 31, an in crease of more than 150,000 over September 30. After the Game Stop At . . . Farlow, class of '39, to present a program of piano duets and vocal solos. The meeting was presided over by Louise Richardson, president. Piano duets were played by Inge Longe rich, Marie Orvls; Eleanor Swain, Mrs. Woodhouse, and Cassie Wil liams. Dick Spencer, Ethel Edwards, and Gerry Garris completed the program with solos.
