Page eight College Anticipates Dec. Coal Quota; Slock On Hand Low (David Parsons, business man ager of Guilford College, was con tacted by the GUILFOKDIAN last Saturday, only a few hours before John L. Lewis ordered his United Mine Workers back to their coal pits. Unable to contact Mr. Parsons for supplementary information, the GI'ILFORDIAN prints the infor mation provided by Mr. Parsons with the hope (hat the strike settle ment will greatly relieve the situa tion here at school.) Anticipating a cold few weeks ahead, but hoping for balmier days, David Parsons, business manager of Guilford College, has described the effects of the nation-wide paralyz ing coal strike as "a serious threat" to college operations. "With any luck at all the college will be able to continue on a modi fied heating system until the l!tli of this month," Mr. Parsons assert ed. "However," he continued, "the over all picture does not look too good, for Guilford still has not re ceived its December quota of coal and unless it comes sometime dur ing this week it will be overdue." "We've cut down on the heating system in the library and the gym nasium, but regardless of conserva tion measures, the college still burns an average of two tons of coal a day." Mr. Parsons emphasized the fact that the school will be able to keep its schedule of classes and activities intact until the beginning of vaca tion. After vacation and the Jan uary 3—'l "That's the immediate problem that concerns us at present," he as serted. "Unless we receive that coal shipment the situation could l>e construed as grave. We'll need that coal in order to open again after vacation." Any snaps of people In informal positions? Enter them in the Quaker photo contest.
