Page Four Miss Gilbert Writes 'Uncle Joe' Article Joe Cannon, former speaker of the House of Representatives from Illinois and a colorful figure in North Carolina history, fs discussed in "Joe Cannon's Carolina Back ground," article by Dorothy Lloyd Gilbert in the October HH(> North Carolina Historical Review. The sketch relates the life of "Uncle .Toe's" father, Horace Can non, who was active in New Garden Meeting during the 1 HMO's and who devoted several years to the teach ing of young Quakers at the brick hoarding school. The period in which Horace Cannon was a member of the Society of Friends in North Carolina was one of intense interest in education for it coincides with the years in which New Garden Hoarding, predecessor of Guilford College opened. Horace Cannon did not wish to rear his family where slavery exist ed, and Friends were moving to Indiana in a steady stream of migra tion, so in 18-10 the Cannons decided to follow suite. However, Cannon always affectionately remembered his North Carolina heritage and re turned many times to the place of his birth, and often entertained large audiences with his droll tales and mannerisms. That, about takes care of things until next time. Oh yes, there is one more thing. Last night on the radio we heard a local announcer talking about. North Carolina Safety Week and he said, "Remember, there are (!4 persons listening to this progam now, who will be dead tomorrow." Cheerful Utile lad isn't he? But that all goes to remind me to remind you to check that GI insurance. If it's lapsed you can reinstate it inline diately without too much red tape and no physical examination. After February Ist the going will be a bit rougher so why not stop by at the Vets' office in Greensboro next time you take in a show ... so long and take care. W. L. K.
