News May Day The annual May Day celebration was a huge success and fulfilled its promise of being one of the most eventful in Guilford history. The W. A. A. cabinet acknowl edges all the fine compliments which have been made and wishes to show hearty appreciation to all those who cooperated to make the festival such a success. Miss Hut chinson is to be congratulated for her expert guidance. Play Days On Saturday, April 22, a group of Guilford girls went to a sports day at Meredith College for the North Carolina members of the Athletic federation of College Women. In the first round robin tournament, Guilford was defeated in Softball by Woman's College. In tennis doubles, Sylvia Peters and Charlotte Flanders were de feated also by W. C. The four were: "Butch" Haworth, Ginny Toole, Betsy White, and Marianne Vic torious. They played five matches, two of which were doubles. In the doubles Butch and Betsy lost to G. C., and Vickie and Ginny won over Elon. In the singles, Butch defeated W. C., Betsy beat Elon, and Vickie lost to G. C. Guilford came out second in the play day with G. C. at the top. The girls all had a wonderful time looking over the G. C. Campus, and they were served lunch on the lawn. Spring Tournaments The spring tennis tournaments wound up in a victory in the sing les for Butch Haworth who de feated Marianne Victorious. The doubles were won by Butch and Betsy White and runners-up were Lynne Jessup and Sylvia Peters. In the mixed doubles, Butch again was at the top with Sonny Dillon as her partner. They defeated "Bo" Small and Lynne Jessup in the final match. Then, horror of horrors, some contemptible miscreants carried some water from Archdale and poured it on the spectators. No one got too wet and the ducks enjoyed it. But the bit players stole the whole show. Cham, Kerr's dream of reincarnation, jumped out of his beer case dog house after two of the ducks, contributed by the Greensboro Park and Recreation Department. Guilford's own Fran cis, the mule, carried Don Wolff and "Miss Laugherty" once around the infield. Later that afternoon the girls held a short ceremony. He said SIOO,OOO of this will go toward permanent endowment of the library and SIOO,OOO to library additions. These additions, expect ed to be finished in the near fu ture, provide additional reading room, office space, and space for housing the Quaker Historical and Carnegie Art and Music collections. The final unit of the develop ment program, introduced last Jan uary, is on its last lap. Funds raised in this campaign will, as was explained, go toward the chapel and "inadequate" Memorial Hall.
