The names of the ten students
from Guilford College named to
the 1955 "Who's Who in American
Colleges and Universities" have
just been released by the Regis
trar's Office. These students, elect
ed each year by a vote of the stu
dent body and faculty, are chosen
on the basis of their contributions
to campus life.
Ossie Marie Brewer, from Bur
lington, N. C., is president of the
j Scholarship Society. Last year she
I was a Marshal and worked on the
GUILFORDIAN staff.
Martha Jean Burton, from High
Point, N. C., is chairman of the
Honor Board. She was Chief Mar
shal and Secretary to both the
Honor Board and the Women's
Student Government last year.

Founders' Day
Program Announced
Again this year, in celebration
of its founding, Guilford College
is sponsoring a three-day program
with special emphasis upon her
contributions to higher education
in the state, the nation, and the
world; her contributions as a
Quaker College to the Ecumenical
Movement of the state, nation and
world; and the role of the Society
of Friends in relation to the
churches.
The opening address will be
given at 11:15 a. m., November 10,
by President Gordon Gray of the
Consolidated University of North
Carolina. President Gray received
his A. B'. from U. N. C. and his LL.
B. from Yale Law School. He serv
ed as a member of the North Caro
lina State Senate from 1938-42 and
from 1946-47. Prior to becoming
president of the Greater Univer
sity in 1950 he served as Secretary
of the Army. At present he is
working with a committee of the
United Nations.
Thursday, November 11 at 8:00
p. m. in Memorial Hall, President
Courtney C. Smith of Swarthmore
College will deliver the second lec
ture of the series of convocations.
President Smith received his A. 8.,
A. M., and Ph. D. from Harvard,
and studied as a Rhodes Scholar at
Oxford University in 1938-39. He
served as a member of the UNSR
from 1944 to 1946 and taught at
Princeton University until 1953.
He has recently been elected pres
