Page Four DOUG REDMON INTERVIEWS MOVIE STAR IN NEW YORK Editor's Note: Doug Redmon has been in New York City pushing three songs which he wrote. Before he left he made a bet with one of his classmates that he could date a movie star while he was there. He didn't quite do this, but he did next best. He interviewed a movie star, Sandra Dee. This is the account of his interview. Note the picture of Sandra Dee with her autograph addressed to the students of Guilford College. I had great hopes of seeing San dra Dee when I came to New York. I had been there about two weeks when I saw her name in a weekly paper called "Show Busi ness' listed under "Celebrities in Town." It was then that I make my decision to make an honest effort to meet her. I called her hotel and was told that she would not arrive until . -r4,. ;P|g, Mm :: :: Saturday at 12:00. After several calls I finally reached her and talked to Sandra's mother. She was very co-operative when I told her that I was sent to New York to in terview Sandy (as she is called) for our college paper. She referred me to Mr. Camey at Universal-Inter national offices on Park Avenue. I did so and was told that there would be absolutely no time for a personal interview. VISIT OUR FOUNTAIN COSMETICS SHAVING CREAM DENTAL NEEDS I hung up very disappointed, but I wis not through trying. On Tuesday, my day off from looking for jobs and keeping ap pointments, I proceeded to the hotel again to tug at "Mrs. Dee's" heart strings. I called up to the room to tell her that Mr. Carney had refused me an appointment and asked her very politely if there was anything she could do. She declined, saying that she had ab solutely nothing to do with Sandy's business life and that she was "only her mother." I then asked to in terview her from a mother-daugh ter viewpoint and she kindly ac cepted saying that she could give about 10 or 15 minutes of her time. She asked me to call back in an hour. I took my place in the lobby and began to read. Looking up I saw Sandra Dee in all her "mink glory" passing by. I froze instantly and just looked. I wanted to jump up and get her autograph, but I couldn't move. Educators from seven counties will be on hand for this event. I was disgusted with myself for not getting her autograph for I just knew that that had been my one and only chance. Going back into the hotel I saw that it was time to call again. I did and I was asked to come up immediately. All the way up the elevator, I felt the butterflies re producing like mad. I walked into a very plush hotel suite covered completely in gold and white. Her mother introduced herself and we began the inter view as follows. Sandra Dee was born in Bay onne, N. J., on April 23, 1942. She was a top model at twelve. Her career progressed rapidly through TV and other media until Ross Hunter discovered her, signed her with Universal, and cast her oppo site John Saxton in "The Restless Years." She did have a small part in "Until They Sail." She was an immediate success and her career was officially launched. Sandra is delighted with her sur roundings. She works with the top people in the movie world: they're all her friends and she is loved by all. As for the future, she is now recording for Decca Records. After learning more about San dra's personal and professional life, I asked, "Is there a possibility of dating Sandra Dee?" Mrs. Douvan looked at me very assuringly and said, "There are always possibili ties!" I laughed hopefully and said, "Then she is available?" "Very definitely," was my answer. I readied myself to leave when the door bell rang. I was very as tonished to see Sandra Dee walk in. Her mother introduced us and I bravely stood up and shook hands with her. We began to talk and I found myself eyeing her from head to toe. She is a very lovely blonde of 5' 6" with brown eyes and a lovely figure. She was then hurried into another room and I was left on a cloud. This was the end of one of the most exciting and satisfying hours I have ever spent seeing that famous people are actually human and can be very usual. TH E GUILFORDI AN jjj^ JULIE TRIMBLE . . .
