Page Four Meet the Baseball Team Pitchers Kendall Buckiier —Kendall is a 5'10", 180 lb. righthander from Siler City. The sophomore has good control, average speed, and is a hard thrower. Mickey Herrin Arm trouble has hampered Mickey this year. The 5'9", 170 lb. Senior from Mon roe was to be the key behind Guilford's pitching needs. He will be missed. Bob Holland—Righthanded Bob is 6'2", 185 lbs. and a freshman from Dallas, N. C. Although he has been troubled with a sore arm Bob will be a big factor in Guil ford's future pitching success. He's got plenty of speed. Walter Linville —A 510 ", 160 lb. lefty from Oak Ridge, Linville has good stuff but lie's been occasion ally wild. The junior has three wins so far to liis credit. Dave Miller —Dave is a lefty from Salem, N. J. The 6', 175 lb. junior is basically used in relief. He's got average speed and good control. Randy Parks—Randy, a 5'9", 170 lb. freshman from Siler City has got plenty of speed and good stuff. The lefty has been having some control difficulties but he's com ing around. Catchers Barry Cook—The 6'2", 185 lb. junior from Winston-Salem is per haps the best receiver in the con ference. He's cut down five of eight potential base stealers so far this year. Barry is a steady catcher Mickey Faulk (standing) chats with Kendall Buckner. John Garner—John, 511", 180 lb. sophomore from Asheboro, is a good receiver and an average thrower. He sees little action be cause he is behind Cook. He may be given a chance in the outfield. Infield Mickey Faulk —A 6'3'\ 180 lb. junior from Garner, Mickey plays average defense at first base. He's a dangerous hitter. Mickey bats left and throws right. Sandy Gann —Sandy's a 6', 175 lb. freshman from Kernersville. He bats left and throws right. Sandy is new at third base but do ing an adequate job. He's a very good hitter with tremendous speed. Lee Johnson —Lee, 5'10", 145 lbs. is probably the best glove man in the infield. He's excellent on the double play. The senior from Vic toria, Va. is the team's lead off batter. He plays second base, bats left and throws right. Elwood Parker —The shortstop from George, N. C., has been a rgeular now for three years. The 5'11", 170 lb. junior is a .300 plus hitter. He's got a strong right arm and good speed. Danny Southerland —This 510 ", 150 lb. freshman from Goldsboro is a utility infielder. THE GUILFORDI AN Outfield Don Foltz—This rightfielder is a 5'2", 155 lb. junior from Winston- Salem. He bats left, has a strong right arm and average speed. His batting is improved over last year. Carl Hampton Carl plays center field. He's a 5'10", 170 lb. senior from Charlotte, who bats left and throws right. Carl has an average arm and is an average hit ter. He'll catch anything hit his way. Bob Lynch—Bob's a 5'10", 185 lb. junior with a fair arm, average speed and is an average hitter. He bats and throws right. He makes his home in Amelia, Va. Luke Medlin —Luke plays left field. He's a good hitter with av erage speed. The 5'11", 170 lb. sophomore from Greensboro, is considered a good glove man. He bats and throws left. Round-up Pitching—Dejspite the loss of number one starter, Mickey Her rin, the pitching has picked up over the 1961 staff. Fielding The fielding hasn't lived up to expectations. Hitting—The hitting at first was slow but recently it has picked up. Injuries to Herrin, Hampton and Johnson have hurt the team somewhat. Now that Hampton and Johnson are back we'll see what happens. Young Democrats Club Organized Here A Young Democratic Club has been founded at Guilford College by Hugh Normile. Hugh, a sopho more, presented his idea in the form of posted announcements for a proposed organization meeting on Monday, April 1. Between ten and fifteen young Democrats at tended this first meeting, and they were acquainted with Hugh's plan for the club's formation. Since that first meeting there have been two more assemblies held in the Choir Room in Dana Auditorium. The first of these re cent gatherings presented Fred erick Rici, President of the North Carolina College Federation of Young Democrats. Mr. Rici stated the numerous activities and ob jectives carried out by Young Democrats in North Carolina. The latest meeting was held on Thursday, April 25, when its mem bers elected Hugh Normile Presi dent and Dale Graham Secretary- Treasurer. A committee of three was set up to draft a constitution to be presented to the Student Legislature for approval before the organization is recognized as a campus club. Various spokesmen in the club expressed different opinions of the club's future. There was discus sion of possible recruiting for membership during Freshmen Ori entation Week. There was also talk over feasible debates between Guilford Democrats and Republicans for the purpose of stimulating politi cal thinking among the students. Mr. Herbert Reid, professor of political science, has agreed to serve as sponsor for the organiza tion. There are more meetings plan ned, and the club's President and members expressed the wish that more Democrats will take an ac tive interest in the plans of the new organization.
