Page 4 Quakers Nine Open Season Despite the chilly temperatures, spring is here, at least according to the sports calendar. Tomorrow, coach Stuart Maynard's baseball team opens its 1969 season by hosting non-conference foe, Belmont-Abbey at 2 p.m. It is a rebuilding year for the Quakers who have lost eight lettermen off last season's 25-10 squad including Tommy Grayson, Jim Bryan, and Marlyn Scott, all of whom signed pro contracts. Five lettermen return headed by southpaw pitching ace Edgar Parker, who compiled a sparkling 1.04 earned run average last season while winning five and losing five. Two more pitchers who lettered are righthanders Mike Stewart (7-1, 2.04) and Doug Fox (3-0, 0.84). Infielders Bobby Chappell, who hit .344 and John Whittington, .294, round out the lettermen. Freshmen counted on by coach Maynard to play a great deal are Jay Terrell, David Pace, John Parker, Vince Esposito, Mike Jones, and Gus Davis. Sophomores Rich Wilson, Ron Horton, and Wiley Andres also figure prominently in the Quaker picture. A difficult schedule awaits Guildord as besides the Carolinas Conference members, the Quaker play Wilmington, Hiram, Otterbein and Pembroke. Once again Pfeiffer and High Point loom as the teams to beat within the conference. The Falcons boast pitching ace Vic Worry while the Panthers have Joe Kolb, a soph who led the NAIA in victories last season. After hosting Belmont-Abbey tomorrow, coach Maynard's squad travels on Tuesday to Belmont for a return match with the Crusaders. Wednesday Wilmington visits Guilford while on Friday, Western Carolina arrives for a single game.
