Friday, May 2, 1969 1969 Grid Schedule Newcomers Davidson and Gardner-Webb highlight me 1969 Guilford football schedule released this week by Athletic Director Herb Appenzeller. The Quakers of coach Bob Lord open their season with Southern Conference foe Davidson September 20 under the lights at Greensboro Stadium. Gardner-Webb, becoming a four-year institution next season, will come to Armfield Athletic Center on October 4. Other non-conference rivals are Emory and Henry on November 8 and Appalachian, November 22. BESSEMER The Guitfordian Quakers Win Track Meet Coach Jack Jensen's Guilford track squad, led by double winners Bob Milan, Joel Deaton, and Mike Swain, routed UNC-Charlotte 105-39 Tuesday afternoon for their initial victory of the season. The Quakers travel to ACC today for an attempt at two straight triumphs. Milan remained undefeated in six meets by winning the mile and three-mile. . Freshman surprise Ken Bailey once again followed Milan in both races, losing by only a tenth of a second in the mile. Deaton scored wins in the 220 (24.0) and the 440 (53.5). Other Quaker triumphs were: Tom Ennis (discus), Denny Robey (Javelin), Jim Becker (shot put), Ray Mitchell (100), John Dent (high jump), and the Guilford 440 and mile relay teams. Grayson Gets Grand Slam Tommy Grayson who gained All-Conference, All-District and All-American honors in baseball during his Guilford career and signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers, made a sparkling reappearance in the area last weekend as he and his class A Carolina League Rocky Mount Leafs played at Winston-Salem and High Point-Thomasville. Against Winston-Salem, Grayson slugged a grand slam home run, before hitting a game-winning three-run blast against the Hi-Toms the following evening. Playing second or third base, Grayson is expected to be moved up to AA ball when his Rocky Mount teaching assignment is finished this month. Grayson's next area appearance will be May 6 and 7 as the Leafs play at Burlington. Aside from his baseball honors Grayson was a stand-out football halfback for the Quakers and also played one season of basketball for coach Jerry Steele. Distances aces Bob Milan and Ken Bailey are seen in familiar front-running positions during meet with Klon.
