Guilford vs. Newberry
Newberry College--Newberry, S. C.; President-Dr. A.G.D.
Wiles; Athletic Director-Fred Herren; Enrollment-850;
Stadium-Setzer Field (3,300); Nickname-Indians; Colors-
Scarlet and Gray; Church-Lutheran; Founded-1856; Sports
Publicist-Paul Fesperman; Faculty Athletic Chairman-
Hubert Setzer.
Coach Fred Herien-begins his second season at Newberry
College, finished 3-7 in Ist year. Native of Atlanta, Georgia,
went to University of Chattanooga, where he starred in
football and track. Graduated in 1958, earned master's
degree in 1964. After seven years of high school coaching,
u e came to Fur man in 1965 as offensive line coach. Married
with two children.
Assistants: Steve Robertson, line coach (Newberry 1956);
Horace Turbeville, backfield coach (Newberry I960); Harold
Wheeler, defensive backfield (S.W. Missouri State 1964)
Last Year-Indians fared well despite 3-7 record. Fullback
George Taylor led the rushing attack with 595 yards,
achieving all-league honors. Gary Welchel handled the
auarterbacking chores. Roger Hazel topped the receivers
and also led the league in punting with a 43,5 yd. average.
The Indians defeated Concord. GUILFORD, and Elon. Within
the conference, the tribe stood 2-4. Scored 141 points
(Taylor high with 42) but weak defensive unit allowed
322 including 69 by Lenoir Rhyne and 55 by Appalachian.
Prospects: Currently, the Indians stand 3-3 overall, 0-2
with the league. They have defeated Gardner-Webb, Concord,
and Mars Hill while losing to Catawba (21-20), Lenoir
Rhyne (42-7), and Wofford (49-14). Quarterback Johnny
Harbin has taken over for Gary Welchel. Jolly Hallman
leads the rushers while Roger Hazel and Howdy Hays
lead the pass receivers. In the offensive line, center
Joby Castles, and tackles Larry Howe and A 1 Granzow
are standouts.
The Indians appear to have strengthened their defensive
unit. Linebacker Bob Hammersla, middle guard Doug Solo
man, backs Saylor Fox and Tommy Watson, and tackle
Wade Nichols spark the defense.
Herren has installed a keen spirit among the Indians and
their fans. "It's ambush time in '69" is their slogan. They
have already equalled last year's victory total. They may
have trouble getting another.

yards.
In other action, Presbyterian
gained its initial victory with a
17-3 triumph over Guilford while
Newberry won a 14-6 non-league
verdict over Mars Hill.
