Wiles; Athletic Director-Fred Herren; Enrollment-850; Stadium-Setzer Field (3,300); Nickname-Indians; Colors- Scarlet and Gray; Church-Lutheran; Founded-1856; Sports Publicist-Paul Fesperman; Faculty Athletic Chairman- Hubert Setzer. Coach Fred Herien-begins his second season at Newberry College, finished 3-7 in Ist year. Native of Atlanta, Georgia, went to University of Chattanooga, where he starred in football and track. Graduated in 1958, earned master's degree in 1964. After seven years of high school coaching, u e came to Fur man in 1965 as offensive line coach. Married with two children. Assistants: Steve Robertson, line coach (Newberry 1956); Horace Turbeville, backfield coach (Newberry I960); Harold Wheeler, defensive backfield (S.W. Missouri State 1964) Last Year-Indians fared well despite 3-7 record. Fullback George Taylor led the rushing attack with 595 yards, achieving all-league honors. Gary Welchel handled the auarterbacking chores. Roger Hazel topped the receivers and also led the league in punting with a 43,5 yd. average. The Indians defeated Concord. GUILFORD, and Elon. Within the conference, the tribe stood 2-4. Scored 141 points (Taylor high with 42) but weak defensive unit allowed 322 including 69 by Lenoir Rhyne and 55 by Appalachian. Prospects: Currently, the Indians stand 3-3 overall, 0-2 with the league. They have defeated Gardner-Webb, Concord, and Mars Hill while losing to Catawba (21-20), Lenoir Rhyne (42-7), and Wofford (49-14). Quarterback Johnny Harbin has taken over for Gary Welchel. Jolly Hallman leads the rushers while Roger Hazel and Howdy Hays lead the pass receivers. In the offensive line, center Joby Castles, and tackles Larry Howe and A 1 Granzow are standouts. The Indians appear to have strengthened their defensive unit. Linebacker Bob Hammersla, middle guard Doug Solo man, backs Saylor Fox and Tommy Watson, and tackle Wade Nichols spark the defense. Herren has installed a keen spirit among the Indians and their fans. "It's ambush time in '69" is their slogan. They have already equalled last year's victory total. Catawba's defense rose to the occasion with the seven inter ceptions and two fumble re coveries to all but eliminate Elon from title contention. Harvey Stratton's Indians now stand 2-0 in the Carolinas Conference, 3-3 overall. Elon is also 3-3 for the season, but 2-1 within the CC. Catawba remains one-half game behind league-leading Lenoir hh/ne. The Bears saw their unbeaten Guilford College Drug Co. Dalton had been the NAIA's leading passer and he certainly did nothing to hurt his position as he threw for 333 yards. In other action, Presbyterian gained its initial victory with a 17-3 triumph over Guilford while Newberry won a 14-6 non-league verdict over Mars Hill.
