Monday, January 19, 1970 Quaker Of The Week M. L. Carr How do these two-game totals sound - 51 points, 35 rebounds, nine assists? Two games against top conference contenders, two victories, and for Guilford's M.L. Carr, THE GUILFORDIAN's Quaker of the week. Carr, the super rookie from Wallace, N.C., performed like a veteran rather than the first year performer that he is during the Quaker's crucial wins over Lenoir Rhyne 98-79 and Elon 62-59. Against the Bears, Carr con nected on 16 of 21 shots from the field, grabbed 17 rebounds, Quakers Scalp Indiansßs-7 8 Guildford cleared the first hurdle of a 3 game obstacle course last Saturday night, over coming Newberry's homecourt advantage, unbeaten league rec ord and a storm of fouls on Guilford players while wiping up the Indians 85-78. The Quakers remained un beaten in Carolinas Conference action, suppressing a late Indian rally which pulled Newberry to a 73-69 deficit after being down by 15. David Smith and Tom Ennis applied a one-two punch to the Newberry attack, as 3 other Quaker starters were stranded on the bench for much of the game with foul trouble. John Dixon and Eddie Dyer provided bench power after the Quaker starters left the floor, each popping in 6 points as the cagers moved from a 2-2 tie to a 14 point lead. A Newberry timeout resulted in some inspired Indian shoot ing, and the margin was cut to 45-39 at intermission. East dropped 4 free throws to carry the Quakers down the stretch, Dyer sank 2 more, Carr popped in a follow shot, and Newberry fell 85-78. Carr and Dyer each had 14 points for the Quakers, adding to those of Smith and Ennis. 6-9 Buddy Moore had 22 for Newberry, as did forward Char lie Gilroy.
