Monday, February 23, 1970 Quaker Oj The Week Tommy Clayton TOMMY CLAYTON Overlooked due to the record setting streak of the Quaker basketball team has been the superb 9-1 record run by coach Arthur Bluethenthal's Guilford College wrestling team. The Quakers won their first eight meets of the season before losing to Southern Conference power VMI last Saturday. The Guilford grapplers rebounded though with a convincing victory F00d... Carr, Teddy East, and David Smith seek the elusive basketball as High Point's John Kirkman looks on. over Furman and nowareprimed for Wednesday's NAIA District 26 Championships to be held at Guilford. Leading the way for the Quaker squad has been sophomore stand out Tommy Clayton. Clayton is still undefeated and on many occasions has not really been severely tested. Despite the loss to VMI, 31ayton won on a fall in one of the most exciting matches of the season. For his efforts this week, and all season long, Tommy Clayton is the Guifor dian's Quaker of the Week. Against the Keydets, Tommy was nearly pinned in the second period. The way the meet was progressing, the Quakers could ill afford a defeat in Clayton's 126 pound class. So what Tommy did was rally and eventually pin his VMI opponent in the exciting third period and gain five points for Guilford. Success though, is nothing un usual for Clayton. His record at Burlington's (N.C.) Walter Williams High School was out standing. Coach Bluethenthal's summation of Tommy takes only one word, "dedication" Tommy Clayton now has his sights on a district title and possibly even further. Somehow the Nationals in Wisconsin don't seem too distant at all. THE GUILFORDIAN Conference Tourney Begins Guilford's top-seeded Quakers begin their quest for the Car olinas Conference championship Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the opening game of the league's 27th annual tournament. The Quakers of coach Jerry Steele, who finished the regular season 14-0 in league play, will battle the league's eighth place team, either High Point, Presbyterian, or Pfeiffer, (this had not been determined at press time) in the event's opening game inWinston-Salem's Memorial Coliseum. Tickets will be available in the Guilford College Business Office at specified hours. Tournament books may be purchased for ten dollars with individual evening sessions costing three dollars. Student tickets are available for $1.50--but only for the first round, Wednesday and Thursday. If the Quakers win the first round test, their semifinal game will be set for 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday brings the consolation game at 7 p.m. with the title tilt set for 9 p.m. The Guilford five is the defi nite favorite but Elon, Lenoir Rhyne, and Newberry must be given consideration. This season the first division looms far above the bottom four and it would take a monumental upset to dislodge the above four schools from Friday's semi-finals. 1968 saw Guilford's first and only tournament title as Bob Kauffman and company led the Steelemen past Lenoir Rhyne 82-61, Appalachian 92-83, and Catawba 80-73. The Quakers have added in centive as a three-game sweep will give Guilford 24 straight victories, tying Lenoir Rhyne's league record set in 1956-1957. The Quakes also want to im prove their overall conference tourney won-lost record from the present 11-17. All the action starts Wed nesday in Winston-Salem with all Quaker games on WCOG Radio. ►♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ I Scoreboard 1 ♦ t ♦ : ♦ This Week ♦ I WRESTLING ♦ X Wednesday, February 25 ♦ NAIA District 26 Championships at Guilford ♦ J Wednesday, February 25 X ♦ Guilford in Carolinas Conference Tournament, ♦ + V'lnston- Salem Coliseum, 7 p.m. + ?
