To complete the contra dictions, Guilford won at High Point, and vice versa, on Monday afternoon. After losing 3-6 to Cataw ba in their first meet last week Kitty Steele's squad rebound ed quickly, prompting the coach to say, "I thought we played better. We had a little more practice and got more consistency." She added, "I hope the trend continues," with the Quakers facing Ca tawba and Salem on Wednes day and Thursday, and parti cipating in a day-long sports marathon at Chapel Hill on Saturday. After his team got off to a 1-3 start, John Lambeth could only say, "We got start ed." With only one regular returnee from last year, the Quakers have been outmatch ed in all but one of their meets, a 6-3 win over Cataw ba last week. Losses, beside that to High Point, have been to J | 4506 W. Market St. [ GREENSBORO, j UNC-G, and Elon. Several of the Quaker men have never played com petitive tennis before, but Lambeth described them all as hard workers. Aubrey For lines, a junior, is the returnee and is the team's top man. He is backed up by John Lamiman, a part-time starter from last year, and Jack Grossman, Tom Scott, Giles Carter, and Dan Perry, plus several alternates. Guilford played at Greens boro on Wednesday, and will play at Pfeiffer on Friday. For the women, who stand 1 - 1, Ann Izlar and Mar sha Wilson remain undefeated after they accounted for two of three Quaker points against Catawba, Izlar came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, and Wil son took 6-3, 6-2 sets. Only Jenny Rawlings, and Joan Portwood had trouble at High Point, going to three sets before winning. Wilson, Izlar, Biggs Barksdale, and Barbara Johnson picked up easier triumphs, and the three doubles combinations won handily also. GUILFORDIAN Hardy Undismayed By Lacrosse Record by Jim Shields After Guilford's 7-5 loss to the VPI lacrosse team last Saturday, Coach John Hardy was unaffected by that post loss paranoia common to many in his position. Hardy, who volunteers his services as coach, is the same way when viewing his 1-3 overall record. "I'm pleased with the team's progress", stated the Greensboro lawyer. "We play ed VPI on a muddy field dur ing a rainy day, but we saw some particularly good play out of our inexperienced team." After the Virginians got five goals in the first half, Guilford tightened its de d fense, and began scoring, but time ran out on the come back. Hardy felt the team could have won, and further de scribes Guilford as able to hold its own when equally matched, such as it was Sat urday. To be truthful. Hardy noted, "that's the only team we've been equal to." Appalachian wasn't in cluded among the equals, af ter Guilford smashed the Mountainneers 9-1 two weeks ago. Even though the Quakers have been wiped out once or twice themselves, Hardy is anxious to compliment his team, especially his close de fense, formed by Val Bristow, Dan Waetjan, Marshall Doler, STEREO WAREHOUSE LEARANCE Pioneer $50,000 Marant2 USED, DEMO, DISCONTINUED, Amps r AND NEW STEREO COMPONENTS Tuner* S.ntt Turntables . Versus VPI, Guilford also got outstanding performances from Dick Singleton on at tack, and Don Scarr in the goal, with close to fifteen saves. The Quaker midfield did well in containing VPl's experienced group. Guilford plays at East Ca rolina this Saturday, another team with which the Quakers should be equally matched. And on April 14, Guilford's last home game. Hardy says there is going to be a very good lacrosse game between the Quakers and N.C. State. Criminal Justice Career Day Downtown A Criminal Justice Career Day Program will be held at the Downtown Campus of Guilford College, 501 West Washington Street, Greens boro, North Carolina, on Wednesday, April 11, 1973, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This program will be co-spon sored by the Guilford College Office of Law Enforcement Education Programs and The North Carolina Association of Criminal Justice Educators. Criminal Justice Agencies from the Federal, state and local level (courts, correct ions, parole, probation, law enforcement, and security) are invited to attend and meet with students interested in a career in the criminal justice THURSDAY APRIL 5, 1973 Contesting such a large school on competitive terms does not faze the coach, who believes that continued hard work is going to make la crosse an adornment to the athletic program. Improve ment is noticeable even from last year, Guilford's first full year in the sport. Though faced with a pos sible, even probable, non-win ning season, Guilford's coach says, "I think we have to get through the initial years of inexperience and getting beat, until it pays off." It's paid off once this year, and Hardy feels it will again in the remaining three games. and/or related fields. High school seniors, col lege seniors and students in law enforcement, police science and criminal justice programs from North Caro lina who are interested in criminal justice or related ca reers are invited to attend and talk to representatives of the different departments and agencies.
