September 12, 1974 Bell Explains Housing Shortage The housing shortage on campus this semester can be attributed to an increase in returning students, coupled with a decrease in the number of students living off campus, not to an unusual influx of new students, according to John Bell, Director of Admissions. More than six hundred students have re-enrolled at Guilford this fall, compared to five hundred and forty the precious year. Fewer of these returning students have been able to find affordable off campus housing than in the past. Women's dormitories are particularly crowded due to a three percent increase in women students. Study lounges on Binford's upper floors are being used to house some of the overflow and single rooms for women are scarce. Floor interns are no longer assured of having private rooms. In discussing Guilford's admission policy for 1974, Mr. Bell stressed that there has been no relaxation of entrance requirements. More appli cants were accepted than in past years due to a higher percentage of those accepted choosing to attend other institutions, but Mr. Bell feels that only well qualified students were admitted. Personnel Reorganized by Forrest Hughes Have you noticed some new faces around campus this year besides the new students If you have, chances are that some of them are working in the Student Personel Office located in the basement of Bryan Hall. There were several personel changes made in this office as a result of the college's self-study conducted last year. This self-examination placed the SPO under particular scrunity. The results were several new positions created and additions to the existing services offered. Ken Schwab, named Dean of Students less than a year ago, has now been named Director of Student Services. The duties of this position Judgement of applications is based on what the individual is able to offer the college community and how well the college could serve the applicant's interests, accord ing to Mr. Bell. The Admissions Office attempts to provide the school with as diverse a student body as possible. Recruitment of qualified minority group students has received additio nal emphasis in recent years. In Mr. Bell's opinion, Guilford's best selling points are strong liberal arts base and Quaker community. The Director of Admissions per sonally accepts or rejects most applications but refers border line cases to the Admissions Committee for judgement. So, if you find yourself \ WW, ,* In Ken Schwab, new head of student services. covers a broad area. Schwab will coordinate the Student Service office and will serve on the Student Affairs Commit tee. Newcomer Dick Coe will become Director of Placement Services on October Ist, leading the way for Dick Woodward to move into the newly created position of Director of Counseling Ser vices. Last year Woodward headed both the Placement and Counceling Services. Woodward's new job will also cover a wide range of duties. He will coordinate all of the counseling services, training people in human relations and work on tutorial and remedial programs. In addition, Woodward will continue to advise Black students. living in a room with three other people, don't put the blame on the Admissions Department.
