QUAKERS PICKED
by Nevets Kceb
Shoot the breeze and chew
the fat, football season is here
once again. And yes dear
friends, just as football season
is here, so is the football
predictor - which is me.
1 guess Guilford College is
about the easiest places one
can predict football game. 1
mean its really hard to get
shut-out for a week when
Guilford is one of the games to
predict.
Or is it? Rumor has it that
Guilford won last week, and
get this, won big. I thought
this place was streaking (32,
that is) years before it came to
be a craze last year. And my
schedule tells me these same
Quakers are playing in town
this week. I just can't wait to
see our double-deck, multi
purpose stadium I was told
about during freshman orien
tation.
The people who run the
school must really support
their athletic teams to give
them such an impressive

stadium, especially when a
simple concrete structure
would be adequate. Now, if I
can only find the stadium.
Well dear friends, back
from a summer vacation in my
native Sumatra, and for the
first time at Guilford, here are
my first picks of the year.
HAMPTON SYNDEY at
GUILFORD
Last year Hampton-Syndey
whipped the Quakers a year
ago on opening day. Not so
this year. Look for Guilford to
take the visitors to the hoop
and stay undefeated. Guilford

ELON at MARS HILL
Here's this week's tuffy.
"Hoot" Gibson from MHC
has more then he is showing
and Elon's "Red" Wilson has
more than he can handle. The
Christians started strong a
year ago and look for more of
the same. Elon 28 Mars Hill

CAROLINA'S CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The Guilfordian

Indians will shatter Glassboro
21-0.
ALABAMA at MARYLAND
Ha, ha, ha. Ho, ho, ho. Hee,
hee, hee. "Bama 49 - Terps 3.
OHIO UNIVERSITY at UNC
Carolina has a reputation
for playing easy non-confe
rence schools but this is
absurd. Bring a blanket and
an alarm clock to this one as
the Heels snooze by Ohio 20-3.
WILLIAM AND MARY at
WAKE FOREST
I don't know about William,
but watch Mary embarrass the
ACC and the Decs 28-6.
VIRGINIA at NAVY
All right, no sinking ship
jokes this week. Watch Navy
upset Virginia's no name, no
talent squad 14-10. Sorry
Ambrose, one good apple
can't ripe the entire basket.
CLEMSON at TEXAS A&M
They say your hair grows
shorter in Texas, not longer.

Scott Scores Hat Trick
Boolers Rip GC 7-1
by Fred Taylor
Coming off an 8-5-1 season,
the Guilford soccer players
came out in fashion form to
demolish Greensboro College
in their season opener 7-1.
Even though G.C. is not noted
for excelling in soccer, the
reason why the Quakers rolled
up such an impressive score
was due to the gifted talent
and expert teamwork which
got the ball in the goal four
times before the half and three
times after the break.
Such kind of play is very
encouraging, especially when
sloppy passing and careless
plays are common in early
season play. But this was not
the case. Behind the leader
ship of first year coach Steve
Hutchins and co-captains
Garrett Wall and Chuck Evans
the team became confident
and psyched for the event.
One reason for the
confidence and fine play is due
to the fact that many of the
starting eleven have played
together for two seasons. The
players this year are now older

ATHENS, W.VA. - For the
third time in five years
Guilford College opened its
football season with a new
head coach. Wiibur Johnson,
fired after the 1972 campaign,
won only two games in three
years. Next came Henry
Vansant who talked about
winning seasons and bowl
trips before vacating the
position to take a similar
position at a Fayetteville high
school. This year it is Dennis
Haglan's turn, but things are
a little different. Haglan
finally has the Quaker football
team rolling. This was evident
as Guilford ripped Concord
20-0 here last Saturday.
This season the Quakers
have the personnel to put a
strong veteran club sprinkled
with talented rookies. Last
years most productive offen
sive backfield of Steve
Watson, Reggie Kenan and
Billy Whitley returns while
Bunky James heads up the
defense again. Against Con
cord this team showed both
excellent offensive and defen
e potential.

and have a lot of experience, a
factor which insures improve
ment over last years team.
This years returning start
ers consists of Bucky Boykin,
David Scott and Dennis Burke
at forwards; and Claude
Arnold, Steve Skinner and
David Brown playing the
halfback positions with Wall,
Evans, and Jeff Burns on
defense. The only newcomer
who managed to break into the
line-up is Robert Pierce at
goalie, replacing last years
MVP Steve Peterson who
graduated.
The game with Greensboro
College got off to a fast start
with an olef fashioned Scott to
Burke Cross who skillfully
headed the ball into the goal.
Again the team of Burke-Scott
forced the G.C. defense into
multiple mistakes as Burke
came up with another goal.
Later in the half Richard
Shumacher crossed the ball in
front of the net to Scott who
put in the third Quaker goal.
Near the end of the period,

Win 20-0
The game began on a
cautious note. Both teams
punted on their first posses
sion, and then the fireworks
began. Gary Crockett recover
ed a fumble jarred loose by
lineman Steve Manning on the
Guilford 47-yard line.
Kenan then broke loose for
runs of 20 and nine yards as he
moved the ball down to the
Concord 15 following a CC
offsides penalty. But the Lion
defense stiffened and faced
with a forth and six from the
20-yard line. Watson called
his own number, swept the
right end, breaking off five
Concord defenders, and gave
the Quakers a first down on
the 11-yard line. Following
offsides by Concord Whitley
rushed twice from the six,
finally scoring from the
three-yard line. Foley missed
the extra point and Guilford
lead 6-0 with 3:18 remaining
in the first quarter.
Mike Williams started the
second scoring drive when he
returned a Concord punt,
rambling to the CG 44-yard
line. Again having good field
position, Watson took to the
air ways this time as he found
