Guilford's loss to Elon was its first of the season and the Quakers now stand 3-1. It was a week for runningbacks in the Carolinas Conference last week. Cataw ba's Ron Adams scored twice and picked up 99 yards on 11 carries. Alex McMillan of Elon rushed for 117 yards on 24 carries and scored once. But Offensive Player of the Week honors go to Mars Hill runningback Ronnie Reeves for his super efforts in the Lions' 39-36 win over Georgetown. In the first quarter of the high scoring battle, Reeves returned a punt 48 yards for the Lions' second score, and then returned a kickoff 93 yards for their third TD of the period. For the next three quarters he just ran the ball -- a total of 14 times for 95 yards on the ground including another TD in the fourth period. His total yardage for the night was 285 yards - rushing and returns. He has been averaging 4.9 yards per carry rushing. As the Fighting Christians of Elon posted their third shutout of the season over Guilford, defensive tackle Randy Oxendine recovered three fumbles to bring him Defensive Player of the Week honors. Oxendine, a sophomore from Charlotte, has four fumble recoveries to his credit this season and has been a mainstay in the Christians' interior line. "I just happened to be at the right places at the right times," he said. Outstanding defensive per formances were also turned in by Lenoir Rhyne's Kenny Martin, Mike Ribet of Guilford, Tom Anderson of Mars Hill and Bill Harrison of Catawba. Four of the five Carolinas Conference teams will be playing outside the league this weekend while the fifth. Mars Hill, has an open date. Undefeated Catawba, one of two surprise teams in the conference, will travel to Emory & Henry in search of its fourth consecutive win. Coach Bill Faircloth's Indians have posted wins over Glassboro State, Mars Hill and Newberry. The nationally-ranked Fighting Christians of Elon will host Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon at Burling ton. Elon defeated the Eagles last year 40-8 to claim the number one ranking in the NAIA that it held until losing in the Champions Bowl to Abilene Christian. Guilford will attempt to get by on the winning track at Gardner-Webb this week after suffering its first loss of the season to Elon last Saturday, The Quakers won their first three games before that loss. Lenoir Rhyne travels to South Carolina again this week to take on the Newberry Indians.
