EDITORIAL Guilford College offers academic opportunities in a wide variety of fields. It is unfortunate, however, that most of these subjects are dealt with only in the theoretical classroom environment. We would like to see greater utilization of the non-classroom learning experiences available in the Greensboro area. We feel that the practical application of techniques and theories learnec in the classroom is an essential part of any student's education. We urge the implementation of Work-Study programs in all fields of study. Work positions could be paid or volunteer, with credit awarded for the experience gained. Work-Study programs could be formulated along the lines of student teaching programs now in use. in which students spend one semester of the senior year actively involved in the field of their choice. At the present time, credit for non-classroom work is extremely limited at Guilford. Education is attained in manv different ways, but credit is attainable only through elassroon work for all but a few students. We not only suggest credit for non-classroom experience, we recommend the incorporation of practical work experiences into the regular structure of all academic departments. Benefits stretch from earning money while earning credit, to making contacts which will be important when looking for a job after graduation. Guilford does not certify teachers who have never taught, this practice should be greatly expanded to insure, for example, that our Management majors will be able to Manage. --D.A.G. Commentary: Outlaws in the Eyes of America by Bob Forman Frustrated, impotent, and terribly scared for my own well-being. I watched as three peaceofficers served their poison-penned writs on an invisible David D. who was no where to be bound or gagged. "26 million Americans, or 16% of the adult population, have tried marijuana at least once. This represents an increase of 2 million people over 1971 (Marijuana Com mission News Release, Feb. 13, 1973) 1 was asleep when they arrived in my suite, but the "beeps" and statis from their walkie-squawkies woke me. When 1 cracked open my door, still in a semi-dream state, the sight of their uniforms, guns, and sumg, sheet-eating grins (yes, they were even making jokes), welled up horror-pic ture images of Brownshirt Nazis who were only doing their jobs. I came out of my room and approached one of them and asked if there was any trouble. He responded, "No, not yet, but there's going to be." "Neither the marijuana user nor the drug itself can be said to constitute a danger to public safety."* (p. 78) "in a word, cannabis does not lead to physical dependence." *(p. 87) Already a few people began gathering outside the suite, looking in, cursing, and putting the evil eye on the enforcers. What could we do? 1 thought for a half a second about going in and reasoning with them, or perhaps trying to make a Christian, love they neighbor approach. That was only for half a second. "62% of those arrested are under the age of 21 (uniform Crime Reports, 1972, Fed. Bureau of Investigations, p. 34) "88% of those arrested are under the age of 26 (p. Ill)* Someone wanted to toss a chair in through the window of the suspect's room and grab the presumed illegal sub stance. Maybe the peaceoffi cers would only wound and not kill him. But who could trust their aim? I thought about finding a young woman or several young women with very loud voices (cheerleaders maybe) and violently raping them one after the other in the middle of squad in hopes of drawing the attention of these civil servants. But they had their orders and they knew their priorities, so all the screaming in the world wouldn't have made them budge. A friend of mine has just spent the first of his 52 week prison-cage sentence for the possession of several pounds of a certain form of God given vegetation. You know, it has just occured to me that when you add the price paid to Judas (the narc or informant) plus the wages of the oinkers, plus the price of the judge (I mean his salary) plus the cost of room and board for this gentle convict, I'm sure that we (yes, we tax-payers) have shelled out between 5 and 10,000 dollars. "Approximately 67% of all college students (present company excepted) have tried marijuana, as have 39% of all people between the ages of 18 and 25" (Marijuana Commis sion, News Release, Feb. 13, 1973. When our protectors left the suite with the brown bag containing the prohibited, "narcotic", "dangerous" substance, the small crowd of curious and brave souls booed, hissed and shouted curses. Several people rolled, and were smoking bogus tobacco joints just to show them that we still had a sense of humor, but they missed the joke. Below our suite the MCS incited: "Kick out the Jams" but it was too late, and the police just drove away. ♦This quote comes from the National Institute of Mental Health, Federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare report: Marijuana and Health.
