Field Hockey
Ends Season
In case you haven't already
heard, Women-Sport has a
new team out on the field this
year: field hockey. Maybe
you've noticed the hard/work
ing group practicing out in the
field by New Garden in the
evening. These Quakers
opened their season on Sept.
25 with a match at Averett
College. A quick moving
offense and a sound defense
resulted in a tie of 1-1. The
next day, the team traveled to
High Point, where Guilford's
novices were met by a more
experienced team. The Quak
ers took the defeat 0-2. Fall
Break and no practice with the
new offensive strategy took its
toll as the hockey team
contested with Averett Col
lege on Oct. 22. On the home
field the fatigued Quakers
took the short end of the score
0-6. On Oct. 24, the Quakers
once again played here at
Women's Tennis
The Women's Varsity
tennis team is trying some
thing new this year: a split
season. About half of their
matches have been played
these past few weeks, and the
complement of the matches
will be played in the spring.
The Quakers had a real
exciting season with these
outcomes: on a chilly Sept. 23,
Campbell College slid by the
Quakers on the home court
5-4. Beautiful weather proved
a catalyst for the Carolina
J-V's as they hosted the
Guilford team in a match on
Oct. 1. The outcome was 8-1.
The following day the Quakers
were back on the road,
traveling to Meredith College,
in an exciting match, the
Varsity Volleyball
The Women's Varsity
Volleyball team has made
some improvements this year,
and have a smashing record of
11-6 thus far. The season was
wrapped up with the last game
at home on Wed. Oct. 30.
Teams defeated by the super
hitters are Meredith (twice),
Pembroke (twice), St. An
drews (twice), UNC-Charlotte
(once), UNC-Asheville (twice),
Lenoir-Rhyne (once) and
Queens (once). The strong
teams of Wake (twice),
UNC-Chapel Hill (twice), and
Elon (once) have kept our
Quakers from a perfect
season. Queens and UNC-
Charlotte were the opponents
Guilford, this time competing
against the powerful Salem
team. Despite a valiant fight,
the Quakers took the loss
o-0-5.
Supervisor Kitty Steele and
Assistant Coaches Leslie
Clarke, Sherrie Flynt, and
Cathy Hokum from UNC-G
expect excellent prospects for
the next season. When they
will have a strong core of
experienced players as well as
an influx of new freshmen.
The team's experienced play
ers include Jane Wilbourne
and Kathy Stengle, with Flo
Smith and Hunter David as
co-captains.
They are joined by their
teammates, Carolyn Davis,
Beth Donaldson, Velina Ham
mond, Barbara Johnson, Mary
Beth Keller, Annette King,
Simone McDonald, Lynn
Ozello, Elizabeth Parker, and
Janet Waggener.
winning team was not decided
until the last game when Janet
Boyles and Jean Roueche won
their doubles contest. The
outcome was 5-4. On Oct. 8
Meredith came for revenge
and turned the Quakers over
3-6. The Quakers traveled to
Campbell minus two anchor
players on Oct. 25. They took
the short end of the score 3-6.
This year's staring five at
the present time include:
Janet Boyles, Jane Wil
bourne, Jean Roueche, Cyd
Atkins and Kelly Erickson.
Cyd and Kelly, who are
freshmen, have made an
invaluable addition to the
team this year, says Coach
Steele.
in the final match
The Women's Varsity
Volleyball team travels to
Pembroke State University on
Friday morning, Nov. 1, to
participate in the state
tournament. They have enter
ed in the "B" section of the
contest and will be playing 7
other teams, 5 of whom have
been defeated by the Quakers
already. The remaining two
teams in the "B" section have
not yet met with the mighty
Quakes, but when they do,
watch out! Coach Gayle Currie
feels confident that her team
will fare well in the matches,
as they are slated first in their
section.
DAVIDSON
Cont. from Page 7
Davidson College provides
the competition for this year's
homecoming encounter. The
last time these two teams met
was back in 1969 and the
Wildcats won 21-8. That was
the same year that Davidson
played in the Tangerine Bowl.
This year is a little different
for both teams. The Wildcats
won their first of the year by
nipping Hampton Sydney last
week, a team which Guilford
had defeated earlier. The
Quakers, of course, slaughter
ed Randolph Macon last week
42-7.
The Wildcats are lead by
their quarterback Dave Har
per. Harper was one of the top
five yardage leaders in
passing last year in the
NCAA. He usually throws to
end Gary Pomoroy, the
leading receiver in the
Southern Conference.
"We are about equal with
Davidson in size and team
speed, although their back
field is a little bigger than
outs," said coach Dennis
Haglan. "If we get behind in
the score we're going to be in
trouble because they make
very few mistakes."
At halftime of the game,
five men will be inducted into
the Guilford Hall of Fame.
They are Thell B. Overman
(basketball, football, and
track), James Bunn (football
and baseball), John Meroney
(two time football all-ameri
can), Jack Tilley (twice
president of the Quaker club)
and the late William Linsey
(baseball). Kickoff is schedul
ed for 2:00.
QUAKERS
From Page 6
Guilford lost its second
game of the year the week
before when Mars Hill got two
chances to win on long field
goals late in the game. After
missing on a 56 yarder,
Guilford was called for being
offsides. The five yard penalty
was all that was needed as the
51 yard attempt split the
uprights.
"It's funny how fate
works," said a dissappointed
Guilford coach Dennis Hag
lan. "Against Gardner Webb
we win on a field goal, last
week (Catawba) we had two
chances to win but instead we
tied. And now this."
Haglan was in better spirits
after Guilford had manhand
led the homestanding Hor
nets. "It was nothing less than
a team effort," he beamed.
"Watson had a good day
throwing the * ball and
Paphities was super catching
it. Whitley ran tough.
