November 15. 1974 9 - BMS THE B-l BOMBER submitted by the American Friends Service Committee The B-l Bomber is the Air Force's proposed replacement for the B-52 and FB-111 bombers --a manned, nuclear and conventional, supersonic and subsonic plane that, when finished, will be the* largest, most expensive weapons system ever built. Total cost estimates for research and development, production, and support systems for -241 bombers range from $43 billion to over $75 billion. The B : 1 is being developed with the following features: ♦Twice the bomb tonnage of the B-52: 24 nuclear tipped missiles or 50,000 lbs. ♦Swing wings that can be swept back for supersonic flight and straightened out for subsonic flight and takeoff and landing ♦Most advanced electronic systems for automated war fare ♦Capacity for use of 'laser death ray', when perfected WHAT WILL THE B-l COST? Total cost estimates for the B-l, if fully produced (241 planes plus tanker fleet, operation/maintenance, infla tion and equipment), vary greatly. The Air Force refuses to make public its own estimates, and instead win only talk about "stripped unit procurement cost". Even this figure continued to rise, however.. From an initial estimate of $32 million per plane in 1970, the Air Force has grudgingly raised its price per plane estimate to $56 million in 1973. It is quite possible that each plane may eventually approach SBO to S9O million. Total B-l System estimates have been made by Princeton University and Members of Congress for Peace through Law, and range from $47.2 to $75 billion. Even the lesser, confiden tial Air Force estimate of $43.9 billion would make the B-l system the most expensive weapons system ever built. SIOOO per American family —in the face of the fact that 26 million Americans, 15% of the population, are below the poverty income line of S3OOO and ten million Americans are malnourished. Militarism and consumerism continue to be overdeveloped, while social services are constantly under funded. While a large part of society has been forced to forgo or curtail the purchase of needed goods, due to reduced purchasing power, inflation or lack of employment, corporate profits have been skyrocket ing. THE GUILFORDIAN The B-l is not only an element in the continuing war against the less developed and the underprotected, it is also an element in the deprivation of all American people, hat SSO billion is taking food out of our mouths, teachers out of our classrooms, and hospitals out of our cities. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THE B-l BOMBER? The American Friends Service Committee is mount ing a nationwide campaign to stop the development and production of the B-l Bomber system and to educate the American people about the role corporations play in the development of such wasteful military systems with such high potential for injury to third world peoples. This campaign will focus upon * education about the B-l, its proposed use, and the corporations which have developed it * visits to corporations, discussions with stockholders ""demonstrations and protests against the B-l ♦organizing of people in local communities to oppose the B-l and to persuade their Representatives to oppose it. This campaign depends upon the support and participation of people who oppose the B-l to help do something about it. Science Education CHAPEL HILL - The Morehead Planetarium has designed a special program about celestial bodies for students. The program, called "Ce lestial Dynamics", demon strates the real and apparent motions of celestial bodies as seen from the earth. The show was added new this year to the Planetarium's special series of programs for public schools. It highlights what can be seen at twilight, the motions of the moon and sun, celestial coordinates and the motions of GUILFORDIAN Editor David Green Managing Editor .....................David Dickinson Sports Editor Steve Beck Photography Editor Toby Gearhart Staff Mike Frost, Jon Hlratsuka, Leslie Zeldin, Bob Johnston, Jeff Martin, Jimmy Johnson, Pat Nevets Kceb Townsend Photographers Randy Catoe Artist PhU Pony Tha OuMtanflM it puMMtad waafcly aacapt lor asamination par- Mi MO vwartowt. Homo sexuals have as much a desire to molest children as hetero sexuals have a desire to molest children ... People who wish to molest children are probably people who are unable to express themselves sexually, and therefore must resort to the rape of those weaker than they ... So, to what do you think we might conceivably be driven if we aren't allowed to express ourselves sexually? Does it really make sense to keep us locked up in the closets? Let us out... Let us be free ... And we won't go crazy and molest children ... ... Sio what if male gays are effeminate? So what if female gays are masculine? Isn't the planets. At the conclusion of the program, the Planetarium's staff answers questions from students. "Celestial Dynamics" is offered each Wednesday at noon. Advance reservations re required.
