Panthers Down Quakers 61-43 by Pat Townsend The lady Quakers met with the Panthers on the home court for the first time this season on Saturday night in the Preliminary to the men's Elon match. The game began at 5:30 with the tip off being taken by the High Pointers for a quick 2 points. Guilford's moves were somewhat dis jointed in the opening minutes of the game, with two fouls being committed and only a lone basket being made by Elizabeth Parker. #22. Quaker Coach Currie called a time-out when the Panthers had pulled their score to a 10-2 margin at 11:38. As usual, the opposing team had their sights set on Elizabeth, who was rather heavily guarded and Cyd Atkins #32, who was rather heavily fouled throughout the game. In a rapid combination of scores, fouls and foul shots, Cyd helped to edge the score up to 7 to their 18. An unusual amount of traveling calls hindered the Quakers' at tempts at ball handling. High Point gave the home team quite a work out in running the court, substitutions of Ginger Garner #3O for Annette King #34. Putting Annette back in for Elizabeth gave the Quakers a chance to quickly catch their breath. Janet Boyles #25. came out for a rest, having just returned to practice recently after illness, and Elizabeth returned to the game in her place. A quick lay-up by Cyd and a well-placed outsider by Eliza beth put the tally at 11-28. But then, with almost 3 minutes remaining in the first half, Elizabeth was benched with a twisted ankle. With Janet back in the game, Cyd once again had her chance at the foul line, dropping two and now halving HP's score: 15-30. Ginger, who saw a lot of turnover action and quick steals in this game, showed much improvement as she worked her way in for a lay up, followed rapidly by a basket by Cyd, and as the minutes neared half time the Quakers stablized the Panther score, so that when the buzzer sounded the board showed 21-30, High Point. Elizabeth went back into the game for the second half, despite her twisted ankle. Janet netted the first basket of the second half with a well-placed side shot which was soon followed by an unguarded shot for Cyd. With 11:58 remaining in the game, Gail Brown, #l2, was injured and benched, also with an ankle injury. Doris Adams replaced her. The Panthers continued to rule the board, even after a couple of hard won lay-ups by Elizabeth and Annette, put the points at a mirrow score, 34-43. As the game neared the close, Velina Hammond. #44, and Charlotte Hines, #lO came in to give Doris and Janet a rest. After 3 successive tries, Cyd netted a rebound, and a well-placed shot outside the circle by Annett ended the scoring for 'he Quakers, with the board Thr fiyilto rdian showing a win for the Panther team at 43-61. Cyd had a very commend able evening with the game high of an outstanding 22; 10 of which were free-throws. Guilford was again the low team in racking up total team fouls, only committing 12 in comparison to High Point's 24. Womensport by Pat Townsend The Guilford College Bas ketball Team faces a very busy wek with games 3 days out of 5; 2 of which are on the road. They will travel to Fayetteville to play Methodist College on Monday, and contend with Greensboro the following evening. It is there game on Thursday evening that is of special interest, when Lenoir- Rhyne will be hosted on the home court at 6:00. Earlier in the season (on December 9), the Quakers tangled with this team, and the game was a "hairline finish" with Lenoir- Rhyne the ultimate victor; their score 55 to our 53, 28 of which were made by Elizabeth Parker. Taking into account the fact that it was early in the season, and an away game, prospects are good that the Quakers will take the win on this upcoming game. Coach Currie is happy to announce that Penny Parsons has once again joined the Guilford line-up. She is sure to prove an invaluable asset to the team. Glad to have you. Penny! Catawba Eludes Quakers by Pat Townsend In a rough and tumble match on the road Dec. 4, 1974, Catawba squeezed by the Quaker team, 51-54. The outcome was not decided until the final seconds of the game and then it was too late for our teams to retaliate. A noticeable factor in the opening half of the game was the great incidence of fouls. Throughout the game the Catawba team made quite an amount; their end total was an outrageous 32! many of which had given Guilford's Cyd Atkins a chance at the foul line. Janet Boyles, #25, had a little trouble with the fouls in the first half, committing 4. Cyd was really in fine form for this match, as she excelled at the basket, putting up lay-ups, pulling down the rebounds and moving quickly on some good pass interceptions. Throughout the game she netted an outstanding 13 freeshots, and had a total point rack-up of an impressive 29. Some accurate and well-placed shots were also basketed by Elizabeth Parker, #22, to give Guilford the edge at the end of the first half, 23-22. Because Elizabeth was not feeling well, she retired to the bench, and Charlotte Hines #2l, started the second half in * m\ V v..-\ \ v- w \ A Free Throw January 21. 1975 her place. During this half Ginger Garner, #3O played well, and tallied a couple points. Not long into the half, Janet had her fifth foul and Doris Adams, #3l, was subbed in for her. The team on court, Gail Brown, #l2, Annette King #34, Cyd, Charlotte and Doris held their own with the Catawba players up until the very last. Quite late in the half, Elizabeth re-entered, taking Doris' place. By this time 4 players of Catawba's team had fouled out. Since they had only a squad of eight, this left four that remained eligible to play, so these 4 were on court. It was one of those strange quirks of fate which may have helped cause the outcome, with the Salisbury team squeezing by our team. With 42 seconds left in the game, the score stood at 51 all. With an intercepted pass, a Catawban gained possession of the ball, and she raced down to the basket with it. In a valiant attempt, a Quaker player tried to keep her from scoring, but committed a foul in the act. So, with the 2 points from the lay-up and the one point from the free throw, with only a few seconds remaining, the Catawba score just barely eluded our Quakers, 51-54.
