Page 8 Women's Tennis When the Women's Tennis Team of Guilford College visited Wake Forest, they were visiting a very strong team. Last week, on Monday April 24th, the Quakers dropped the match 9-0. They staged a rapid recovery the next day, however, when they met with Lenoir Rhyne on the home courts, and won 7-2. On the following Thursday, the women played another 7-2 victory over Pfeiffer on their courts. Yesterday, the team competed against Wake For est on our courts, and tomorrow there will be a home match again, this time with Salem. To end the season, the Women will be competing with the High Point team on Monday, April 28 at home. Two distance runners warming up Men's Tennis Tops L-R The Guilford College Men's Tennis team started the week off right with a 6-3 win over Lenoir Rhyne's team on Monday, April 14th. The restof the week, however, went slowly downhill, as a strong UNC-G team took the match 6-3 on Wednesday, April 16th and the Quakers again took a defeat to Catawba on the Salisbury courts the following day. This 6-3 loss was one of those "it could've gone either way" type matches, where each Guilford game lost was a very close one. Then, on Saturday, April 19th the Guilford ment ravelled to High Point for their first match with that team. Unfortunately, only 4 of the team members and the coach were able to go, and the score may have been a reflection of the dearth of players, as the Quakers returned to Guilford pointless, losing 9-0. Preceeding that match, of course, are yesterday's away contest with Atlantic Christian, today's home game with Pfeiffer, and the Thurs. away match against Elon College. This Spring's team line-up consists of Steve McDermott, Kip Lornell, Phil Perry, Jim Raeche, David King and Kevin Morris. Peter Ostrowski played earlier this semester, but due to the fact that he was a transfer student without enough credits yet, he was ruled ineligible. Under the powerful coaching of Scott Hutchinson, with Kitty Steele as acting coach, this semes ter's Mens' Varsity Tennis team is bound to have a victorious season! Best of luck! The Guilfordian Matches don't start forest fires. People do. And they do it because they don't think. And because they don't take the time to be careful. In the few seconds it takes you to hold a match until it turns cold, and to break it in half, you can think about the forest you're helping to protect. And that's something well worth thinking about. And well worth your time protecting. Newspaper (Sinai A The Advertising Council Intramural Softball By Jeff Blank With one week left in this year's intramural softball leagues, there is a tight race for first place in the men's league between Bryan and 3rd floor Milner while Shore is solidly in the first place slot in the women's league. Bryan and 3rd Milner both have perfect records at 4-0. Frazier and Ist Milner are tied for the next spot at 2-1 with 2nd North Milner right behind at 3-2. Shore has a comfortable ead with a perfect 3-0 record. Bryan and the two Binford teams are tied for second place. Bryan and Binford 111 are 1-1 and Binford I and II is 2-2. Both of the leagues are very competitive and games are often times closer than the scores would indicate. Wed. 23 3:00 Day Hops vrs. English 4:00 Milner I vis. Milncr 111 5:00 Milncr IIS vrs. It all began a couple of weeks ago when a group of loyal baseball fans met out by center field to cheer the Quakers on to victory. After a few such gatherings Dr, J. Floyd Moore, a religion professor, wandered out to speak to the group and ask "What is this, the Center Field Elite Club" and it's been their name ever since. Often the only fans to stick out the baseball games, the Center Field Eliters are required to be steadfast fans with the ability to make twice the amount of noise as, say, twice the number of High Point fans can muster. Even through cold windy games, the Center Field Elite Club do their best to let the Quakers know they have strong support and to make the opposing team's outfielders as uncom fortable as possible. The warm weather seems here to stay and there's not too many nicer ways to spend and afternoon than watching a baseball game. The Quakers are now 9-1 in the conference (the only game lost was to High Point!) and they deserve a lot more support than they've been getting. We, the Center Field Elite Club encourage the rest of the school to get themselves down to the baseball field Sunday and let our guys, and High Point, know that we are the best!
