September 30, 1975 Craft Center Workshops by Sylvia Arnatt Every Wednesday starting October 29-December 10, the Craft Center in the basement 1 of Founders, will be holding workshops in batik, natural dyeing and spinning which I will be teaching. There will be three workshops for batik, one for dyeing and three for spinning. All that is required for these workshops is a minimal fee for materials, interest and participation. Choir Season High P by Pat Townsend The Guilford College Choir opened its 1975-76 season of music with a performance at High Point Friends' meeting on Saturday the 27th, in the evening. Ed Lowe directed the choir in a varied selection of musical pieces ranging from Beethoven to spirituals. Kathy Mclver, who was the choir's accompanist last year before her graduation in May, accompanied the choir's on piano for the majority of the performance. Barb Smith and David Haworth also played the piano for some selections. For "The Heavens are Telling" by Hay den, Lark Wellborn, Volleyball Women Win Two (almost by Pat Town send The Guilford Women's Varsity Volleyball team open ed its 1975 season last Tuesday night with a tri-match against UNC-Charlotte and Catawba College. The team faltered slightly, but beat UNC-C 9-15,16-14, 15-11. The squad of Lady Quakers had their hands full when, at 9:30 they finally faced the Catawba team. This scrappy bunch were constantly returning everything that came their way. Coach Currie agreed that the opponents were steady and determined, but feels that the Quakers gave the game away, as they had been leading 14-4 in the third game. The first contest of the match had been a speedy Quaker win of 15-9, but by the second game fatique had set in on the women, and the score was a near miss of 16-14, Catawba. The visitors were able to gain 12 straight points to win the game before the Quakers could score one. (fifteen points is the score needed to win, with an advantage of two When I came to Guilford College I realized that I had something I could give the Craft enter; that bring my knowledge of crafts that are not usually taught. I wanted to be able to share this David Haworth and James Hood were the soloists, and in "Beautiful Saviour" Mary Ann Brown sang the solo. Lark Welborn and David Haworth presented some special solo music midway through the program. During the second half of the performance, Sylvia Arnatt was the featured soloist in "There's a Balm in Gilead". The choir ended the program with an impressive and powerful rendition of Beethoven's "Hallelujah" from the "Mount of Olives." For this performance the group was joined by ex student of Guilford, Jim Knight, a resident of Raleigh, who was an active member of the choir last year. The choir and director were well received by the people of the meeting, and it was difficult to decide who enjoyed the performance more, the guests or the hosts and hostesses! points required.) Pressure, crucial mistakes on bumps, and bad serves helped to lose the game. However, Coach Currie observed, "It did give our tear the chance to see that it is not impossible for a team to make that much of a comeback. I hope if we're ever in that position, we'll be as stubborn as Catawba about giving up!" The Quakers were victorious over the Aggies of A&T last Thursday night 15-3 and 15-13 in a match involving the entire Quaker squad. Also scheduled for that evening was a game with Bennett College, but extenuating circumstances caused them to make the cancellation. Doris Adams, Diane Conk lin, Charlotte Hines, Terry Hoge and Elizabeth Parker are the returning players from last years' squad. Of the eight new comers to the team, seven are freshmen. They include, Sally Busken, Cathy Flick, Kathy Gilbert, Lee Hertzog, Betsy MacKenzie, Liz Moran, The Gnilfordian knowledge with people and give them guidelines for exploring these crafts by themselves. My interest started about seven years ago, when I began 'teaching myself crafts that I saw around me. I became more skilled, and decided to start teaching two years ago. I'm looking forward to leading these workshops, and hope that everyone interested will come and join us. Lightness Charac Tuyla Tharp by Chris Benfey Friday night the Twyla Tharp Dance Company open ed the Concert/Lecture Series of UNC-G. Ms. Tharp is one of the leading dancer/choreo graphers in the world. "Deuce Coupe", a piece she choreo graphed to Beach Boys music, was performed by the Joffrey Ballet. In Friday's performance the stage was always bare. The lighting was simple and unobtrusive. The audience's attention was focused on the movement of the dancers, which was often unbelievably complex and sometimes very funny. Two dancers dressed in white hold a pose, ready to execute a classical "pas de deux". The audience waits in the awed silence of a religious place. The male counterpart drops his gaze, stares intently at a spot on the floor, and lets loose a projectile of spit. He rubs his ballet slipper into the spot with exquisite delicacy. With the first notes of the music - from a Bach cantata - the couple begins to execute the familiar arabesques and pirouettes of the classical ballet. The spit, however, has put the audience on its guard; the chic white costumes look more and more like ordinary underwear. Therfe are more spits to the floor, with no less in tempo, no loss of concentration. Poses dissolve and Wanda Robbins. Beth Howell is a junior and a new member, also. Coach Currie feels the team has extremely good potential, being particularly rich with strong spiking talent. How ever, a great responsibility has fallen upon the shoulders of Diane Conklin, who serves as the sole starting setter. Due to lack of experienced setters, the team has adapted to a new offense called a 5-1, where there is one person on the court at a time to do all of the setting. r ASTRONOMICAL FEATURE FOR OCTOBER'7S A fine meteor shower occurs from October 14th to November 7th. Known as the Orionid shower, it is best seen in the pre dawn sky for several days around October ±2l ± into the rhythmic quirks and playful flops that distinguish Twyla Tharp's dances. Between two Chuck Berry numbers, in a take-off on fifties dances, two women dancers hand to their partners the gum with which, while dancing, they have been blowing enormous bubbles. The thing is done so subtly it is hardly noticed. Twyla's wit does not insist. Twyla is a diminutive fireball. She dances with an unbelievable looseness, yet with no consequent loss in precision. Her dances move; the audience is never bored. No long dramatic episodes - which expressions of Pain, Sorrow, the Tragedy of Life - strangle the prevailing light ness of her work. The lightness, though, is not superficiality. It is alive, awake, electrical. In a time in which more and more dancers dance against, or even despite, the musical score, Twyla dances with it, often so effectively that you can almost see the music. In an embellished version of Mozart's "Twinkle, Twinkle", one dancer's movements coincided with the staccato embellishments, another's with the slower underlying theme, creating a fascinating impression of counterpoint in movement. Backstage after the perfor- The Women's Varsity Volleyball team will be contesting in a tri-match with the High Point and St. Augustine College teams at 7:00 in the "Crackerbox" (the Gym). This will be the last home game for the Quakers before they "hit the road for a while", playing at St. Andrews, Methodist, UNC-C and High Point before returning home on October 23rd to play Louisburg and Pembroke. Performance mance, your reviewer spoke with one of the dancers, whom he knew from his dancing days. She was drenched with perspiration and her hands were shaking. I realized that the easy lightness of the Tharpian technique requires an immense physical effort and discipline. She had been in the Martha Graham Company, one of the most severe and austere, and also best known, of modern dance companies. "I cut my hair, and bought some blue jeans," she said, "and quit the Graham company while I could still do it comfortably." On October 3, the UNC-G series will present the Chinese Acrobats of Taiwan, on their first U.S. tour. "Far more than a mere series of stunts", say the program notes, "their performance is an ancient and integral part of Chinese culture, based on a desire for man to find perfect harmony between mind and body." On October 4, there will be a performance of the Broad way hit, "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope", a jazz musical with "a Black orientation" and a tone "sardonic, rather than bitter". Norman Cou sins, longtime editor of the Saturday Review, will speak on October 5, at the Elliot University Center. Concerts and plays are at War Memorial Auditorium.
